New Summer Runabaout Ph1 Cti

Well after not having a single working 205 for about 2 years (despite having 4 of them and a 309) I decided the only sensible thing to do was buy "another" 205 :)

So a scan on eBay the other week brought up a tidy ph1 CTI for sale in Barnsley which I pass on the way to work each day so I went for a look the other Friday after work and £1250 notes later she was mine :)

She's in pretty good condition, there's a tiny bit of rot on the front of both the doors just below the check straps, but that's about it. Inner wings and cills etc are rock solid. Its got loads of service history and a box full of recipts MOT etc its been pretty well looked after.

Here's a few pics

On inspection of the boot floor I found a random surprise (which has now been removed!) full on Dixie horn setup!!

There are a few wiring niggles as some previous owner has made a bit of a lash up of wiring up the central locking/electric windows so I'll sort that out, plus a few bits of the ph1 dash are cracked so I might see if I can source a new one for reasonable money.

but the other plan is to use my other CTI to trial fit my V6 engine so I can literally do a drop and replace once I've sorted everything out. So keep an eye out for my V6 conversion thread

I love your logic Matt - "I know I've got four cars that don't work already, so instead of fixing them, I'll buy another with an intention of shortly pulling it apart too"

Yep they're ph2 lights, the wiring is shall we say "interesting" and even uses a length of speaker cable!

Mechanicals I can do in an evening/weekend its bodywork thats my achilles heel as once I start something I like it perfect but body work invariably takes ages so hence why I have 5 non working ones :(

Looks nice Matt - unusually modified phase 1 seats too.

That's beautiful but the only phase 1 thing about it is the dash board  everything else is upgraded to black and leather and 1.9 allys but by god its very attractive my favourite cars these :D

Thinking about it, I might as well put my V6 work here rather than start a new thread.

So as I said the plan is to use my other CTI to fit the V6 engine to so I can keep the other one on the road until i'm at a point where I can just swap it all over in a week/weekend.

The V6 engine I bought from Daviewonder included a SES top mount and also pre shortened driveshafts which are 2 of the major obstacles in the conversion.

So anyway first job I did was to whip off the air con pump as that's not going to be needed. It will mean sourcing a shorter Aux belt.

Once that was off, I stripped off all the suspension and subframe from the car. I stripped everything off the subframe as well.

With that done I could simply lift the engine into the engine bay

The next thing I looked at was ensuring the engine was level so using the crane and load leveller I adjusted the leveller till the top engine mount was sitting parallel with the gearbox mount.

With the engine level I could then check the exhaust tunnel clearance, Space looks pretty good

as does the space between the drivers chassis leg and also bulkhead

I then just had enough time to offer up the subframe on my trolley jack to see where i'm going to have to chop a chunk out of it for the diff.

20130521_232446.jpg

the lower engine mount seems to be in the right place at the moment, but until the subframe is mounted properly I cant be sure

The gear lever mount on the subframe needs removing but as we'll be using the 406 cable shift its not needed

Last night I made a start on modifying the subframe.

So after repeated offering up the subframe, marking with a felt tip and cutting with the grinder I was left with this.

20130523_212132.jpg

20130523_212139.jpg

20130523_212148.jpg

Once the clearance between the diff/exhaust and the subframe was sorted I came across the issue that the inner CV joints were touching the front wishbone mount on both sides. I attempted to alleviate this but putting a cut in the top of the mount section which goes over the top and then hammer it down with a view to rewelding it to give it back some rigidity, but even so it's not sufficient to allow enough clearance.

20130523_212157.jpg

So the solution is to lower the subframe slightly and possibly raise the engine just a bit.

So I lowered the subframe by 10mm which gave sufficient clearance on the passenger side but on the drivers side it was still touching so the next thing I did was to check that the engine was level.

Using my spirit level I could see that the car was level on the axle stands, however the engine was showing as being lower on the drivers side with it sat on the engine mounts so I lifted the engine up on the drivers side (with the gearbox end still secured) till the engine was level and this then gave an equal gap between the subframe and the CV joints on both sides.

20130523_211912.jpg

20130523_211811.jpg

however the drivers side mount needs raising by about 20mm which means it cant be secured to the rubber engine mount as it stands as there isn't enough thread to secure the nut to.

I wonder if anyone else has come across this using the SES mount?

The option might be to raise the rubber mount up by top 10mm and then have another 10mm spacer between the top of the rubber mount and the SES mount which should give it enough thread for the nut to attach to.

20130523_211620.jpg

So that's where I am with it at the moment. I need to get some proper spacers turned up for the subframe which Mr Fenton has kindly offered to help with as I've not managed to source a new backplate for my lathe yet so I can't use it :(

A chap had a dozen or so made up a while ago. You might be able to get your hands on a 2nd hand one if you might up a wanted thread.
