Xud9 Rad Fans

Recommended Posts

I have a problem on my 205 where the fans wont kick in. I have found the thermistor(?) (plastic plug with 3 wires attached, on the n/s back of the rad) is not plugged in anywhere. Where should i be looking for where it plugs in? I can take a photo if it would make it easier?

Cheers guys :)

Near the top hose on the actual rad. Blue plug, 3 wires as above

I think i may have explained unclearly.

What i mean is, the thermistor is in the rad. There are 3 wires going from the thermistor into the loom. There are also another 3 wires from the thermistor, going to a 4-pin plug. It is this plug that is not connected.

Hope this is easier to understand what i mean.

Thats the fan test plug by the sounds of it, it's for diagnostic purposes only.

So theoretically, if i put a positive and earth to this plug, the fans should kick in?

Being an XUD, it should have the relay based twin fan setup on it, which is quite different to the GTi setup (single fan, no relays)

Most reliable way to test is to unplug the 3-pin plug from the thermoswitch and to short the pins inside - two of the pins should make the fans come on slow (running in series) and two should make it come on fast (running in parallel).

  • If that all works fine, then the thermoswitch is almost certainly dead.
  • If nothing at all works, check the earth by the headlight is good, that the 12v feed is connected to the shunt box and that you'd got an ignition feed to the red 2 pin plug
  • If both fans work but only on one speed, it's probably a dead relay.
  • If only one fan works, either the fan is dead or there's a bad connection

Hope that helps.

Cheers for the info mate :)

I've checked for voltage in the cables directly to the fans and am only getting a 0.1v drop from the battery, so they have power.

Will play around with the plug pins tomorrow.
