Thermostat Question

Recommended Posts

Haynes manual says it should be 82 degrees for my 1.9gti

I've just gone to change it and my old one is 88 degrees so I called up my local parts shop and they have both 82 degrees and 88 degrees showing as suitable for my car.

Did they change it half way through build or something? What should it be?

On the plus side my old one was knackered as I suspected so at least it's proving to be beneficial.

You tend to find them with both types fitted, more commonly the 89 degree from what I've seen.

Just replace it with a new 82 degree and it'll be fine - that's what I usually do, and it's always been fine :)

Thanks buddy, just thought I'd check before I fitted. Should I notice any difference on the temperature gauge?

I tend to switch thermostats , 82deg. during the summer time for better cooling and 88/89deg. for winter , mainly for better cabin heating ..

A little - the 89 degrees 'stats tend to sit on the line just below halfway, and the 82 a little over the line before.

(different gauges and senders will read a little differently of course, particularly if the wiring is substandard)
