Better Turn In

Recommended Posts

Guest smckeown

Hi all,

I notice on a twisty track the amount i have to turn the steering wheel on my car is silly, nearly crossing arms.

I talked to SBC who dont tell quick racks any more, and advised me against such a conversion, and told me the power steering conversion is just so expensive.

So the other alternative was fitting a smaller (~310mm) steering wheel...

what do people think..will this do the trick ?

cheers

sean

Can you not get the standard racks gearing adjusted?

I have power steering and was hoping to get a faster rack and retain the PAS.

PAS is about the quickest rack available (2.7 turns).

I have a PAS-rack with the PA removed ;)

There were three variants:

Peugeot:

til 1988: 3,7 turns and large turning circle

from 1988: 3,5 turns a smaller turning circle

PAS-rack: 2.7 turns

SBC:

SBC-quickrack: 2.5 turns ?????

Cheers,

Hilgert

Demon tweaks used to sell quick racks for most cars inc the 205 - think they are 2.5 turns & cost about £160 (ish) - I know I say this a lot but have a look in there motorsport cat. as they really do, do a lot of things.

A smaller steering wheel won't make it turn any more for the amount of steering wheel input.

There was a complete power steering rack kit on ebay a while back i thought of getting, even if i was only going to run it with the "power" bit disconnected.

Hilgie; is it heavier than standard steering with a PAS rack with the ram disconnected?

ive got a tas quickrack. not sure on the ratio as i thought it was 2.4 but could be 2.5 lock to lock. It does make the steering alot heavier but makes the car more fun to drive ;)

I remember a post a while back from Saveloy deeming the TAS rack utter crap. ;)

I havnt got any details about the rack, i bought it off someone on the PSC. As for difference on track, it feels ok. Its a bit easier to catch slides but turn in and things dont really feel much different. Its not go-kart like anyway. Only thing i can think of really is if someone finds the original steering heavy then dont swap. The quickrack is much heavier than standard even when moving.

My "Quick-rack":

PAS completely removed, so it is about as heavy as a normal rack.

Hilgie, did you blank off the hydraulics or are they ok just to leave open?

I reckon you could just put caps in there to prevent dirt getting in. Someting like a grommet might do.

I put exhaust tape over them initially as I wasn't sure if the hydraulic action would force air out or not but it doesn't so bolts the same thread as the hydraulic pipe unions would be fine although I've never actually got round to finding and fitting any....

Doesn't any1 find play in there PAS rack?

I was told that (PAS Racks)although they are slightly quicker they do a bit of play in them compaired to Non-Pas racks.

Any truth in this ? Or is my rack just F!*k*d

I've done a few unassisted pas racks now and they are all fine in terms of play...

I drove my car yesterday with the non-assisted pas quick rack & there was no play noticable with it fitted, can't see why there would be either. It is all still connected solidly so the shouldbn't be any slack.

I used to RTV sealent to blank the holes up where the hydraulic pipes went into the rack body.

The steering doesn't feel any different to a normal non-pas rack for weight IMO.

Non-PAS rack : 3.7 turns lock to lock

PAS rack : 3.2 turns lock to lock

Quick rack : 2.7 turns lock to lock.

Pity about TAS!!

I used to have a non PAS rack

Now I have a PAS rack and it is definately heavier on my car - bit like when your front tyre pressures are low - it's a fight to turn it at low speed
