[Body_Work] Miami Blue 205 Gti 1.6 Renovation

Recommended Posts

Right I thought it was about time I started a thread to detail the forthcoming work that I'll be doing to my recently purchased 205.

I picked it up a couple of months ago in reasonable condition. I went for this one mainly because its a very rust free example and has relatively lowish mileage. I would have preferred a 1.9 but this one drives very nicely indeed and has the potential to be a very nice car indeed. Here are a couple of pics from the day it was collected, the photo's make the bodywork look a lot better than it actually is. There are a number of smallish size dents to be gotten rid of and the paint on several panels is well past its sell by date.

First up are sorting out some smaller jobs to get it tidied up before the winter. I've attacked the plastic arches as they were very patchy and not looking too great, they should be black but are not close to that at the moment. For now they have been cleaned up and in the spring I'll bring them back to new. Here are a couple of before/after pics

Another easy job was to fit a new filter housing with in-tact manifold bracket, at the same time treating it to a brand new K&N element rather than the rather well soiled standard foam filter I took out...

Another job I hadn't planned to do quite so soon was get the wheels refurbished, however a special pre xmas offer got me tempted to get it done. Rather than go for a cheap spray job the car was despatched off to The Wheel Specialist in Fareham for them to work their magic!! The wheels were all fully stripped of tyres and old paint/damage. Then they were powder coated for a long lasting finish, and the finish really is second to none!! They werent really too badly damaged to begin with but the refurb really transforms them. Not the cheapest option but certainly the best!!

Again here are some before and afters...

For now thats about it, with winter here I wont be doing too much more.

Planned though for the Spring/Early Summer are a full re-spray and later in the year a full interior re-trim.

I'll keep this thread updated as and when bits get done to the car. For now though time to enjoy it :)

The Lambo belongs to a friend of mine, they were local to the area I picked the car up from and seeing as it was a nice day thought it would have been rude not to take a few pics :)

Not too much to report this week other than I've accumulated a small stash of clips and bits for the impending work. The car goes in on Monday for the re-spray work to commence.

Off to The Wheel Specialist in Fareham in the morning to collect my 'Goodwood' alloys :)

End of the first week and here are a few photos showing the current state of play. The stripdown is revealing a very rust free car which I knew beforehand. Nice to actually see it though with various bits removed...

Not as much bodywork progress this week. Priority was to straighten out a little impact damage which had bent a few bits slightly. You can see the bumper bar which took the hit. Unfortunately what its connected to bent our of shape slightly which creased the front wing just a little. Now its repaired the crease has gone and its all 100% straight again.

The welded bit you can see was not affected but this needed to be removed to straighten out the damage behind...

Also new bonnet has arrived along with all new replacement trim clips etc. Full steam ahead this week coming with the rest of the bodywork!!

End of week four and now things are progressing at a faster pace. All the initial prep work is now complete so now the car is completely dent and damage free.

The tailgate, doors, bonnet etc have now been removed as well and the first coat of primer has been laid down as can be seem in the photos.

This has only just been applied and now the car will go next week back into the main workshop for the rubbing down and flatting process. Later next week the final priming and then painting will start to take place, hopefully should be complete in around a week and a half's time.... :)

Think I saw this in the field at Goodwood breakfast club today, if so it was looking very good, wish I could have had a better look, should be very happy with it as looked stunning and in my opinion showed up a lot of the more expensive cars there.
