[Car_Upgrade] 1.9 Gti Rust Repairs And Bodywork

Recommended Posts

There should also be a bracket from the spot light mount on the valance back to the front panel. Without it the spots will vibrate like mad and potentially crack the plastic.

Do you know where i can get these from? i think i remember actually there being some sort of really rusty bracket on the back

New battery tray stripped and painted,

Slam panel and head lamp panel painted, Didn't know the colour code for the slam panel and the paint shop had some blue left over so it went blue

Huge thanks to Farmer, got me some parts i wanted,

Genuine side repeater i was missing

Genuine front indicators, fit so much nicer than the aftermarket clear ones i had!

New nearside headlamp, although now the offside doesn't match as it looks old.

Slowly, getting more parts to get the bodywork back together,

I purchased some ''205'' and ''GTI'' stickers of ebay for the rear quater badges but after fitting one i wasn't happy with it! didn't look goot at all.

So i spend a bit of time trying different ways to try get it looking nicer, first attempt finalised and apart from a little paint bleed im happy!

Sanded down the part and sprayed red:

Left to dry over night

masked and sprayed with black trim plastic paint, left to dry and pealed masking to leave this...

Light dusting off clear coat on both so it doesn't dry super shiny but to protect the finish

Left to dry and masking removed to reveal...

Neat Idea on painting the badges. Never thought of sanding away the masking tape.

I spent hours on mine with a small paint brush and some silver model paint,

This took about 15 mins, plus the drying time, real easy todo with a DA

I have booked xmas off at work so i thought it would be a good time to spend on the car,

Ive sorted out insurance, everything declared, engine conversion, throttle bodies, ECU ect and agreed value too, i was expecting it to be about £1500! but it was very reasonable at around £300! so im very pleased its now insured.

Rang up my work for an MOT booking on saturday morning just gone, insured and ready to drive down it decides not to start!!

Got the odd back fire but nothing,

Took the plugs out, all wet so was getting fuel, cleaned the plugs and checked for a spark, very weak if a spark at all.

quick trip to halfords for some plugs, got back and fitted them and it fired straight up.

Unfortunately i was too late for the MOT :(

Luckily as im off this week, my ramp at work was free so the car sat there locked away ready for a couple bits for me to sort before it MOT

So on the monday i got the car up on the ramp, fitted some small bits, Handbrake cable, rear brake pipe brackets and a front number plate

As the car hasn't been mapped yet, it been running really poor, i thought it was due too the not being mapped, but after a play about on the laptop and reading the OMEX instructions i had a fiddle with the idle when the engine is warm with the emissions machine hooked up, its running really lean at 0.2 CO but the hydrocarbons are bang on now the idle is sweet and the engine ticks over really smooth!

The Mot went really well with it failing on just headlamp aim, and some missing locking wheel bolts i removed :)

0B3820E7-E64E-47AF-8ECF-56FB7A203FD9_zps

Sorted out seized adjusters on the headlamps

He wasn't too happy with the front plate but couldn't really fail it.

Oh haha, Andy i started out with some 'black trim spray' that the bodyshop had when it was being sprayed, but it matches what halfords sell.

Got the battery bolted down, still a tad unsure about it, not sure if i need to mount it in the engine bay so the cables aren't as long but it does seem slow to turn over, but always starts,

Sorting out some niggly bits, the oil pressure light wasn't working, found out id wired it up wrong!

Cant find the wire for the oil pressure gauge??? need to check a wiring diagram,

A85B63A9-FE83-4434-B985-826537D8261A_zps

This wire is the oil pressure switch wire i had it plugged onto the gauge sender,

6A329248-7302-4600-AE5A-A4BBA4A17F6B_zps

I have the xsara oil pressure switch and a cut a plug of an old loom that fitted the switch, think it was a coolant temp plug as was blue but was ok, soldiered and connected and tested,

forgot to get a picture of the plug :(
