Xsara Vts In An Xs

Recommended Posts

joed66

hello i have a 1988 xs and wanting to convert it to a xsara vts engine and box (purely for the 5 speed)

how easy is it i know you have to change the subframe to a gti or diesel

is anything else big involved or do they just drop in and plug up?.

do i need to change the tank and what pump is best to use as mine is mechanical.

do the shaft fit or do they need to be modified

do i need to change my hubs to fit the shafts?

i am sure i will need to change the top engine mount on mine as mine is for a tu engine

will the the standard vts gear linkages fit and work

and i am sure i will need to modifiy my exhaust to match up

is there any work such as cutting and re welding the engine bay?

and do i need to change the radiator or will running 2 fans be enough?

sorry i no its quite a few questions but i want as much info as i can on this before i jump in to it.

Cheers WP, its not all that straight forward, only a handful of TU > XU cars on the fourm.

-As you say new tank + new lines as they are on the wrong side and wire the pump in.

-You ideally need GTI clocks, dash loom, and change your lights/washer/wiper etc loom to a GTI item

-GTI subframe

-GTI gear change, linkages, lever

-GTI header tank

-You will want to get some sort of heat shield on the bulk head as TU's don't have them.

-completely new exhaust

-and all the nromal conversion items, I may of missed a couple things!

Along with Brakes, BE Driveshafts, You need the mount for the header tank too, GTi water pipes, Rad and Rad cowl, 1 fan is fine here.

Also being 1988 the top mount will need moving, Best to find a GTi inner wing for this

I already have 266mm brakes on mine so thats one thing i have lol

I was also planning on heat wrapping the exhaust.

I am thinking of getting a xsara and using as much as i can off it .

Quite!! Depends on your knowledge level.

Have a look at James_Pug's build thread of his 205 cab v6...

DIY you need a very good level of DIY and time to get things to fit, Mounts, Driveshafts, Clutch operation, Subframe mods etc

Allot, Stick engine in and work around making things fit, Allot of time and making parts is needed, along with welding, engine mounts so pretty much everything

When I did mine I stripped the xs shell bare then refitted everything from a gti. I had to weld on a top engine mount and cut quite a bit off the rear arches so they cleared the gti wheels. I used a gti6 engine and had to cut out and cover the bulkhead for the exhaust downpipe to miss. It was a lot of work
