205Gti Getting More And More Rare?

Recommended Posts

welshpug

That may be the case, but i've yet to hear of anything that would ground a car, any service part is still readily available, as are most mechanicals.

I bet the people that live down my road don't consider them rare-

not seen many either, but the ones i have seen about seem to be fairly well looked after. Decided not to insure mine as I only drive it to and from the MOT station once a year, then one pay for that days insurance.Wish i had more time to enjoy the car  seems such a waste not to blast around in a 205 TT :P

Part availability in the U.K can only make things harder to keep the 205 on the road most of the parts that are left are in Belgium , Netherlands etc

Don't say that. I went on a break to Belgium recently and on my return had a little google at Peugeot dealers and found out one was less than a mile away!

I was sad enough when in Greece a few months ago to pop into a Peugeot dealership to see what 205 stock they had lying around (nothing exciting) Almost came away with a lion branded china tea set though.

Everytime i need a part 9 times out of 10 a dealer in Belgium has it on the shelf its just finding a dealer that will buy it and post to U.K

I also have an itch to scratch for a hairdresser's RWD car ;)

I know that itch - seems to be an almost natural addition to the fleet of GTIs

If I spoke the language or knew the right people the situation could have been a little different.

I am not impressed at all with their attitude and workmanship in general.

Unfortunately, most of the so called "craftsmen" over here tend to speak a different language, even if you are native German (and I just refer to "proper" Germans here).

It's just that our "brilliant" proffesional education system has been pushing out a very unhealthy dose of idiots over the last two decades.

Last week I had to educate a German "Service and Parts MANAGER" at Citroen on how to use the service box without having a VIN to start with.

He would probably consider changing brake fluid a risky job as well.

Feb, get on board french-classics.de (I'll contact the admin if you're unable to register)

and you may find some local 205 owners or at least get some help about what garages to use.

Indeed! There are a couple of witty guys around in your area.

SAM_1385.jpg

Most UK 205s are being hoarded by Davie and Baz (mostly Baz), so now we know why they are a rare sight :)

@Feb and Anthony, the point I was making earlier is that if you (Feb) are struggling now, then there's not much point getting another GTI further down the line if you're still in Germany. If you were talking about a point in time when you are no longer in Germany, then fair enough. Perfect example was the mention of the trouble getting hold of an MC, as it's the sort of thing that's a common repair on any GTI even if you did get one that was otherwise in bloody good condition. Like I said, you'll always have something that needs to be done.

As the old saying goes "better the devil you know", so maybe the better long term plan would be to bite the bullet and bring the current GTI for a holiday in the UK to get Anthony or Miles etc to go over it with a fine toothed combe. Obviously I have no idea about your financial situation etc, but it just seems it would be better to get this one sorted and enjoy it, rather than have to start with an unknown quantity in the future, and have the pain of potentially sorting out previous owners problems.

I only ever see one other 205 around in Bath, an old chap who potters past the road I live on in a nice sorrento. The only other cars of a similar age I see at the local Citroen garage, Im guessing two people who work there have a 405 Mi16 and a 309 Goodwood, as both cars are always there. Im quite impressed, as both are very rare these days!

@ glpoomobile yes, that's what I said, only if/when i return to uk will i consider a 205 again provided i have grown some patience then :)

the "there will always be something that needs doing", my lack of time, skills, garages and difficulty to obtain parts e.g. the above mentioned MC means it has to be sold unfortunately as i need a car to be able to use daily without constant tinkering. of course keeping it off the road and not using it would make the most financial sense but i don't see the point of owning a car without using it.

edit. bloody phone i cant type.

i would like to know what % of people use theirs daily nowadays.

under different circumstances and if in the uk i would have de-specced it slightly and kept it.

Anthony hear? keep the suspension parts ;)

You are in a lucky situation where it gets a rest for two consecutive weeks in a month though and you don't depend on it to go to work i imagine?

it looks very tidy.

You're right, it's not a commuter, just used daily when i'm not offshore.

Whilst not daily, mine is used for commuting most days in the summer and I would have no qualms in going back to daily-driving it if needs be.

I don't. and never have, seen the point in owning cars that I can't use regularly and have always said that when I can no longer use the 205 regularly because it's become too precious or because of parts availability, it will be sold. Thankfully, that's quite some way off still :)

can't be that rare, i have an original umolested superb example and no one is interested in it, not that it makes any difference but i call rare only 5 left, when there are still around 2000 on the road and maybe 3000 on a sorn then there are still plenty around and spares never seem to be an issue

I'm currently sorting out my Mi16 whilst using it daily to commute, the 1600 box is a pain on dual carriageways though!!! Where I live is a quiet village but there are 3 other 205's, a white phase 1 gti, a white 3dr 'shopper' & a red 3dr 'shopper', so I would say they're not that rare round here.

i used one of mine to commute to work every day for over six months

that was york to barnsley, a 98 mile round trip.

lots of motorway at a good speed and it never ever batted a eyelid

proof that they can be used daily and do it reliably

Up until around 2 or 3 months ago my 205 was driven everyday for nearly 4 years. I did on average 30 miles a day, didn't let me down once! :) now its stored in a barn and I use it whenever I can really.

I probably see 4 or 5 205 GTI's (same ones) on a weekly basis, this does include 3 that I know well.

Im a ford boy at heart and have owned many escorts/capris/sierra/ and fiesta's. and the reason i got a 205 as it came up silly cheap and i had the daily fiesta off the road for welding and sprucing it up. 7 months on im still driving my 205 daily and sold the daily fiesta that needed and bought more parts for the 205. whilst my main mk1 fiesta project hasnt been touched.

ive found in my ownership there are lots more 205's round than my fiesta's theres 4 at different houses within a mile of mine which i never seen before i owned one and went hunting for parts there just tucked off the roads and thats just the gti's theres xs's and diesels floating about. fiesta's however are just a nightmare. i can go to my local scrapyard and there will be 3/4 205's but never fiestas they rusted long long ago same
