Hydraulic Lifters Xu10J4Rs Engine

Recommended Posts

bas1974

Hi,

Is it necessary to drain the hydraulic lifters from oil, before assembly on a XU10J4RS engine?

Or can I put the head back together without removing the oil inside these lifters.

Should be emptied.

You can also strip them down and clean them out properly if you want, just watch the little spring and ball bearing when they fly apart!!!

According to the manual the lifters should be emptied of oil before assembly, otherwise the lifter can be stuck in the maximum postion.

resulting in ????

As above, also your putting more strain on the threads in the head when tightening down the cams/carriers.

Or a leaking valve, when the valve should be closed?

You could also end up with a lifter that doesn't fill with oil. Last engine I built I left the oil in to save the hassle.

How do you take the lifter apart, tapping with the lifter on a wooden block according the manual doesn't seem to move the piston in the lifter.

TAP HARDER!

you don't need to empty them totally, but compressing them down is a good idea.

Can't tap any harder, what about blowing air in the small hole so the piston will be forced out?

Put them in a vice and pull the centre out with pliers I found the easiest ;)

resulting in - valves being held open - like my engine.

I drilled a hole in a piece of 6" long 2"x2", placed the tapped in it and slapped it against a lump of 4x4" fence post I had, easy :D

I really would not go at them with pliers.

My favourite is melamine. The hard white surface seems to shock/bounce them out better. Softer timbers just absorb the shock.

I succeeded in getting the pistons out of the lifters, what was needed was a hard piece of wood (workbench) and then tapping very hard with the bucket on the bench.

Thanks for the advice.
