205Gti Tidy Up And Mi16 Upgrade

Carbs4me

Hello All,

As my first Mi16 conversion, I thought i would share it with you all.

I'm not quite ready to get the engine in but the car is still very much been used as my daily right now.

In the next month are so the project will really kick off, once my uncle gets his Landrover Denfender 88 out of the garage my project will be well on its way.

At the moment im just preparing myself for what is to come! By this i mean gathering as many parts as i can get my hands on.

So here is the car in general its quite tidy, I believe there is no or little rust but i havent removed those side skirts yet.

So thats the car that gets treated better than my misses! So firstly i had to source myself an engine which came and found me £200 all in and got some extra goodies but on the down side it had a cracked block due to the incorrect sized head bolt spacers.

Here are the spacers he was using against the ones that should have been used.

After the strip down of all the parts the crank was shot but the rest of them seemed fine.

I sent the crank off to get a reground and barings to match. (i have not pictures of this)

I set my heart on using carbs, and i ended up buying TB's by accident! dont ask! But here they are R1 Thottle Bodies.

post-14397-0-84930000-1341840861_thumb.jpg

Quite clean really and i heard that nothing ever goes wrong with them!

After the engine had been stripped, i set my sights on getting a new Block which Anthony kindly provided me with. once i recieved it i got to work on it and cleaned it down with the help from the misses it was painted the next day... here she is at work!

A couple weeks down the line i had the cyclinder head redone, valves reseated and reangled. Full gasket set to fit the engine, the Linered bored out to suit the Forged pistons i recieved from someone i got off the forum (cant remeber their name)

I have just got the cyclinder head back today fully built up and ready to be bolted back on the other half of the already built engine. Ignore the paint job... yes we missed bits!

Over the weekend i managed to get the engine out and start degeasing the engine bay and stripped out the wiring loom for the lights fans and horn, i also started sanding the panels of the car down only managed to sand 1 half of the car at the current.

Upon stripping the engine bay of its header tank and screen water bottle i noticed that both my inner wings where rotten. I have no pictures to update you all with the drivers side has a 2 n half inch hole init and the other has rotted on the join which the wing bolts onto.

Next job for tonite is to use the engine crane to lift to the car up high and start taking off the understeal from the underneath of the car while the axel is on then i will do the same with the back and take the axel off in the process.

Expect updates tommorrow with pictures of progress.

Looking good! (The engine I mean - not the rust! :)) What phase is this one - is that a full leather interior?

phase 1.5 and yes full leather interior need new back seats tho as one of them has a hole init. yeah the rust isnt the greatest thing ever, i aint looking forward to sanding those bad boys down! fortunately my grandad has offered to weld it now and is even on about buying a £450 welder to fix it! Crazy man!

Yeah the engine has been sat there awhile collecting dust.. only just got my timing belt and water pump other day

MOT and tax has just ran out today and it blown a piston ring last monday so i decided its time the Mi16 was brough to life!

This model didnt, but im not to sure if they where optional or not!

I will update this thread very soon!

I havent really taken any pictures!

But i got all the rot sorted so far on the front end and engine bay welded 2 plates in place of where my inner wings where rotten!

and its now set in primer! so im guessing my hands can take a rest from the sanding for now as ive been doing it for at least 2 weeks

out of interest - what was wrong with the old engine? was it a 1.6 or 1.9?

Carbs4me

it was a 1.9

Not sure what was wrong with it, Did a track/sprint day kept going flat out of the corners, 4 weeks after it basically had thrown in the towel i guesstimate that the ring has gone missing badly but runs and sounds like there is a vacuum in one of the cyclinders!

Only way i can describe the noise is a "plunger"
