Old Driveshaft Issues Reccuring

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Hope everyone's ok.

My 1.6 8v has been back on the road a few weeks now and I'm really enjoying it but I have a niggling problem with one or more of the driveshafts.

Basically when using more than about half lock, powering on in corners or especially in reverse the driveshaft(s) knock. At slow speeds (backing off the drive/car parks etc.) I can feel it in the steering wheel but when driving along I can't feel it, just hear it.

The car has always done this since I've had her (13 years) and the driveshafts that are on now have only done a minimal mileage despite being about 4 years old. Before they went on I went through a number of driveshafts on both sides but even when they're brand new I still get the annoying knocking.

The boots are all fine and there are no leaks (I've checked these myself and it has just gone through MOT).

As far as I know it's all standard (1989 1.6 8v) so I can't see as there'd be any issues with hubs etc but I'm totally at a loss.

Is there anything else that may be causing this knocking or is it just how it is?

Thanks for any help.

Ian.

have you checked the front brake calipers recently?

My thoughts, either calipers (sliders or pads moving in carrier) or perhaps diff bearings?

Thanks both,

As far as I know the calipers are ok - it's just been MOT'd and they did pick up on one of the sliders missing it's retaining pin. I also asked them to give it a 'proper' inspection whilst it was in as well as just an MOT so the guys at my not so local but very trusted Peugeot garage have been all over it with a fine tooth comb.

Also, as it's always done it and I used to get it frequently serviced and inspected by a Peugeot specialist (he's sold up, hence me getting into this now) I'm sure the calipers are fine.

Diff bearings sounds like it could be quite a big/expensive job

...on second thoughts would it be worth me getting her up on axle stands and turning the front wheels by hand to try to pin down exactly where the knocking is occurring?

1.6 calipers can appear to work OK but have worn sliders - usual give away is a noticeable knock/clunk when you reverse and press the brake, and when bad enough, the brake pads won't wear evenly/squarely.

They don't generally cause a knocking noise that you could mistake for a worn outer CV though - a sort of rythmic knocking that increases frequency with road speed, and I can't see how it would worsen under power either (as outer CV's do). An easy way to confirm would be to gently left foot brake when the noise is occuring and see if it changes or disappears - if it doesn't, then it's nothing to do with the brakes.

Seems unlikely to be stuff like wheel bearings either if it's been occuring for years

Hockey stick bolts loose? Its unlikely that would be the case given that its effected numerous driveshafts but it would lead to similar symptoms. Or even longer shot - driveshaft intermediate bearing?

I really am clutching at straws but its a couple of things to check whilst you're under there!

Thanks all,

I'm taking her for a run at the weekend so will do some investigation on the road before I get underneath her.
