Xsara Vts Diff Swap!

Recommended Posts

fatony1

I'm currently swapping the diff in my Citroen Xsara VTS gearbox and although I've found the guide on the main site very helpful i do have a few little questions :)

Firstly the 2nd hand 205 diff I have seems to have developed a very small bit of surface rust while it's been sitting in my toolbox at work, I was going to give it a wipe over with a scotchbrite to remove it then give it a good clean with thinners/gunwash, will that be ok?

Secondly, can anyone recommend a good brand of sealer to use between the diff cover/gearbox? Also the guide mentions 'high grade' thread lock to secure the crown wheel bolts, again does anyone know the best make to use? Also are new bolts 100% necessary?

Last of all, the rubber O ring seal between the diff cover and the speedo housing got a bit ruined on removal, are these available separately, and if so, will it be a Citroen part only or are they the same on all Peugeot BE3 boxes?

Thanks in advance :)

stag wellseal or loctite or wurth rtv, the o-ring is the same on all BE boxes.

depends how bad the corrosion is, give it a rub down with scotchbrite and if it comes off it'll be ok, the bolts are only 45p each and they do have a tendency to strip when removed, don't forget the torque wrench, the setting isn't particularly high, standard threadlock will do.

RE the sealant, use a good quality gasket sealant, I had some granville stuff and its was s*ite, so used some more expensive better quality stuff. Its also quite a good idea to replace the bearing on the diff, one either end.

I'm at work on my phone so don't have access to servicebox, does anyone know the number for the O ring seal?

I'm a big fan of ThreeBond 1211 sealant (if not for you, but for the next person who has to clean it off) and Loctite 243 for the bolts. Second hand is fine, torqued to spec.

None of the bolts stripped the threads, quite amazing really considering it was half 11 last night, i felt particularly lazy and used a 1/2" drive nut gun

What about heat? Heat them right up and they'd slide off surely? Or would that damage the diff? Im scared of wrecking something with a chisel lol! Also what's all this i've read about shims and preloading the bearings etc?

I'd recommend a new set of sun and planet gears, not cheap I know but these fail quite often and will kill the box 9.9 times out of 10

those are the bigger later diff gears, they don't fit the 205 diff, also part of the cause for the diff swap in the first place.

it'll be £130 from peugeot too...

Get the bearings from Miles, I bought good quality ones from a bearing specialist and after all the hastle were only a fraction cheaper :) Steve

Have them in stk so no worries there, I'd hate to think what the dealer would charge and normally now it's cheap old Eastern European bearings these days

Take a look in my shop and drop me a PM and we can sort something out.

Pre loading bearings depends on the box, if it has a shim in then it will need doing or if not the speedo housing does the job fine
