Using Carb' Cleaner

Recommended Posts

ian010778

Hi all,

As I've been reading it's become apparerent that although I've stripped and cleaned various bits like the throttle body, breathers and AFM independentley it might be wise to give my 205 a good blast of carb' cleaner to give it a good clean through to finish the job.

The question is (please don't laugh) - how do I do this?

Do I administer the carb' cleaner whilst the engine is running and if so, where do I spray it into the engine? My common sense is telling me not to spray it into the air intake as it will go through the AFM and air filter - should I perhaps disconnect the SAD pipe and spray it in there so it goes more or less straight into the inlet manifold?

I seem to remember a mate of mine spraying carb' cleaner through my first car (16 Ford Escort Ghia) about 17 years ago with it running but it was a long time ago. IIRC he just took the top off the airbox and sprayed it straight in but I'm not sure about my 205 as it is running the standard injection system and I don't want to break anything! :-)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ian.

I wouldn't be spraying anything in the inlet with the engine running, given you have stripped it all apart it'll be clean enough, carb cleaner is much like brake cleaner but less corrosive to rubber components afaik.

Both are basically Trichloroethylenes

Not whilst the engine's running no! Just stick some through the pipes or on a rag and clean as you would normally, easier with them off/sperated obviously.

ideal as a diagnostic tool for the lazy, not a bad substitute for easy start

Remove the throttle body, thoroughly clean it out off the car.

Cheers all - I won't be spraying anything whilst the engine's running then :-)

Myself i use plain tap water (yes - water !!) , i fully warm up the engine , lock the idle rmp @ 2000 , hook up an piece of hose connected on a garden spray bottle full of water on a inlet manifold brake servo vacuum outlet , and spray in the water with the engine running - it cleans up the s*it of the engine like an enema ! .. like a dish washer ... you can literary see the carbon crap coming off the exhaust ..
