Ph2 106 Gti Gearbox Stuck In Neutral.

Recommended Posts

skinner2k3

Without any warning the gearbox in my 106GTI has just locked.

I drove the car 16 miles home from work with no problems, pulled into the carpark, went to select reverse and the gearstick refused to move.

Its stuck in neutral, clutch seems to be ok, linkages all where they should be.

Any ideas???

if the linkages are good and engine mounts present and correct then its just a case of chocolate teapot MA box!

I will get a better look at it over the weekend. Hopefully its a linkage, but they did all look good at a quick glance (in fading light!).

There was at no point any noise suggesting it had shat itself, so hopefully its something fixable.Cheers

the gearstick is on a rubber ball joint pivot, mine actually jammed a stone in the pivot once, might be worth checking.

i kno this is not a pug gear box, but my vans box blew and the replacment box i got was stuck in gear, turned out the selectors were out of line,

i took the selecter of knocked them into line and worked fine!

don't know if this applies to pug boxes tho??

Which other models could I source an MA box from? Assuming I may end up at the scrappy trying to find one!

The box currently fitted, as fas as I know, is from a 1.4 (XSI?). I would like something slightly longer, maybe the VTR/Diesel box if 106???

you don't want the vtr or diesel boxes, they'll be non sport gear clusters, and the diesel will be a small diff and VERY long, best bet would be a gti or a vts box, shouldnt be hard to find one on the 106 rr or SSC, or 106moaners.

Trouble is if I end up needing a box I am going to have to try and source one locally at the weekend.

Ok, I can get hold of a VTR box this weekend. Not found a VTS/GTI box though.

So what difference is it going to make other than longer gears?

Are the non-sport gear clusters significantly weaker???

VTR wont be any weaker, just crap to drive

Fair enough, that will be why all the breakers seem to have vtr boxes in stock but no vts!

Thanks for the info.

I removed the gearbox yesterday, as I lifted it I heard something rattle inside and now the selectors work again! Hopefully I can open it up and find out what was jamming it.

Miles

You can bring it down and I'll have a quick look, Opening it up can be a mare due to shallow headed Torx bolt's, Good idea that one 'not' and a clip on 5th gear which needs changing everytime it comes off

Cheers chaps.

Unfortunately I didn't check this thread today as was working on the car. But I traced the rattle down to a circlip and trust washer on the end of one of the shafts. Only needed to remove the end cover and refit the washer and circlip. I (possibly wrongly) assumed that was the problem and have now refitted the gearbox, all seems well so far.........

I put a diesel box on my 106 gti engine in my Xs, after I blew the original gti gearbox, and I can definitely say don't put a diesel box on it as they are REALLY long!!
