Hey guys, i've been messing around lately with the car and i'm thinking of doing some modifications to the engine to get even more power.

From what i've read about this engine , the place to start would be the air intake , and camshaft, am I right?

Would I benefit more from a universal air intake like the K&N apollo , or from a specific one for this engine/carburettor (solex 32)?

And wich cams would you recommend that give that extra power but can still get decent mpg and driveability around town?

It's a 1991 XS.

Thank you for your time,

Miguel

Hi Miguel,

I've got an XS, I've had it over two years now.

Regarding more power, I have carried out the following modifications;

First thing I did was purchase a set of BBM Engine and Gearbox mounts to stiffen and reduce the "Engine Rock", stright away, it made the car more responsive.

Next, was to upgrade the Intake filter and give the carburettor a stripdown, clean and service.

I then borrowed my mates strobe light to check that the ignition timing was right.

Once I had some more cash, I invested in and had a custom 4-2-1 exhaust manifold with full stainless steel exhaust system.

I recently rebuilt the cylinder head, had it skimmed, and ported, and fitted a Kent PT02 Camshaft and Kent Vernier Pulley.

Now it goes like s*it off a shovel, with extra torque courtesy of the camshaft!

Next chapter with be Bike carbs!

I hope that's helped you.

It's take a while to get where I am with the car, but it's been worth the wait!

Thanks for your response.

May I ask what air intake did you get?

I used a pipercross trumpet sock with a custom made cage over the carb top.

Would you mind taking a pic so I can see it better?

So, this month i'm taking the car to IPO ( portuguese MOT of sorts) and after it, i'm planning some poison.

Right now the list is this:

Change oil to higher spec 15w-40 ( can this engine take fully syntetic oil?)

New distributer cap and rotor

Carburettor cleaning and new gaskets.

Besides this, i'm also thinking about a camshaft, fast road one.

Wich one would you recommend, and what other parts/processes would be involved with installing one in proper working conditions?

Hi mate, I'm away from my laptop at the moment.

I'll upload a photo of my airfilter setup and tell you what I've done to my engine, tomorrow!

Hi mate,

I took a couple of pics of the home made air filter I made a couple of years ago.

I used a pipercross trumpet sock with a custom made cage over the carb top.

As I mentioned previously, I sorted out the cylinder head with it being ported, and fitted with a Kent Cams "PT02" Camshaft - it has a 284 degree duration on both inlet and outlet.

The next step for me now will be the fitting of a pair of twin 40 dellorto DRLE's that I've recently purchased. That should add a couple more horses to the cause!

Hope it helps you with your quest for more power.

I have had a few AX's with the same engine.

If you use an aftermarket filter or cams then you will need to rejet the carb. The original K&N filters came with a bigger main jet.

Is there anywhere else to get some jets for the carburettor?

I can't seem to find any online.

If you give these guys a ring they'll be able to sort you out with some jets. Their website is a little old fashioned and doesn't list all their parts but if you ring them up they're a veritable Aladdin's cave of carb parts. It's where I got my carb rebuild kit for my XS from & they had jets in stock. I never enquired about international postage but their website says they post worldwide so I don't think delivery to Portugal would be a problem.

I 'think' there might be a 10% discount for forum members if you check in the groupbuy/discount section, at least there was last time I bought some top mount rubbers from there :)

and dont forget to make sure you get the correct lower engine mount if they're for your TU

Cheers for the heads up, it says in the site you have to choose xu or tu when buying.
