"looseness" And Slight Noise, Steering

Recommended Posts

I'm not very mechanically minded so I don't know the right words to describe this issue, so I'll try it in layman's terms: When the 205 GTi is parked I can move the steering wheel by about 2cm either way without the wheels turning. When I do this there is a "knocking" sound. It sounds like it's coming from within the cabin or the console. Any idea what this might be and would it be serious/expensive to resolve it?

from the top;

Steering column UJ's (x2, upper and lower), Steering column pinch bolts (x2 again)

Play in the steering rack pinion bearing, play in the inner track rods, play in the track rod ends, play in the lower balljoints or stretched balljoint clampa, aka ovalled hubs, worn top mount bearings.

Loose steering rack bolts, loose subframe bolts.

probably a few more, but just get under there with a torque wrench and a lever bar and you'll soon find it, have an assistant wiggle the wheel whilst youy look and feel for play.

It sounds like the UJ has worn out, its at the end of the steering column next to the steering rack. Also check your track rod ends, they may also be worn out too.

Hope this helps :)
