Do GSF sell this as I've never seen it in the Reading branch. Does anybody know how much as I've found a website that does it for £3.95 inc. VAT per litre can.

Need a tin pronto....

my local Motaquip supplier has it on the shelf, as does my local PSA specialist, and the dealers...

you may pay a little more but you'll get it today.

My local TOTAL fuel station used to keep it, worth a look if there are any nearby?

GSF used to sell it, but I've not seen it in there for a while now.

As said, Peugeot dealers have it in stock and it's about £12 or so for 2 litres.

This is a ridiculous first post to make, but you may be aware that the BE gearboxes were first specified to run with 15/40 engine oil. A friend I know who has done many thousands of miles in cars with BE gearboxes lately informed me that no changes were made to the box to require or facilitate a change to gear oil, and that he always just used standard 15/40 engine oil in all the cars he has run with BE boxes.

Cut to my (recently resurrected) 205, which I carried out a major service on last month. This car has always had a slightly obstructive change into second particularly when cold, and also has been slightly noisy. Despite the fact that I had replaced the oil with new quality gear oil less than 10 000 miles ago, I decided to change the oil in it for engine oil as an experiment (I used mineral 15/40 diesel oil). The result is a much quieter and smoother box, with cleaner gearchanges.

I shan't be bothering with the Total BV anymore!

Wrong I'm afraid, Due to the Synco's in these box's (All the same from 1983) must use 75/80 or 75/90, You can use other oil but I've seen the state of what happens with the wrong oil

GSF have moved all there oil to Carlube now, gone are any good oils from them now

If you have a eurocarparts nearby, they stock a Valvoline 75/80w GL5 gear oil which isn't too badly priced.

I already regret replying to this thread, but I think you'll find that it's EP gearbox oil that damages these gearboxes, while I don't dispute that their later specified oil was indeed BV 75/80, if you find a handbook or PSA documents from the early 80s, I think you will be surprised find the specified gearbox oil was 15/40 engine oil.

Here's my 2p.

The velocity in gearbox oil needs to be high, else the oil just comes of the sides of the cogs which leads to friction. The ratings you posted looks far too low, im sure you know but gearboxes have very fast moving parts and gets hot with barely no cooling system.

Miles knows his gearboxes, he rebuilds them ;)

as he said, from 1983 its been 75W80 BV oil.

Sounds like he is getting confused about the old 205s with XY/XW engines that had the gearbox in the sump and did indeed share the same oil as the engine. Was that the BH3 gearbox? not sure. But it definetly used engine oil. Whereas all BE's use BV 75w80.

Yeah you are correct. My 86 GT XY8 engine has the BH5 gearbox that is on the front of the sump and uses the engine oil for lubrication, which when i replaced the wishbone i was quite surprised about tbh. It has the same gears where the reverse is below 5th gear like the BE 3 type. The BH1 was for the lower 1.1 litre type engines like the XW7 XV8 and had up to 4 gears.

As Miles said the BE1/3 needs the proper spec gearbox oil.

I'd put your 2p back in your pocket and go check the relative viscosity of gearbox weightings vs engine weightings Surgie ;)

The BE (and the MA) actually need fairly thin oils (especially cold) otherwise the syncronisations are very slow + the teeth get damaged from the pressure of people trying to change faster.

If you have a look at the Castrol website http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829 and search recommended oils for 205 GTI 1.6 you will find an interesting note which rather explains things; the recommended oil for the BE gearbox was indeed engine oil, which is what the box was designed to run. In 1988 the gearbox oil change was removed from the service schedule, and then the BV oil was recommended.

As Rippthrough indicates, gearbox oil weightings are expressed differently to engine oil, and 15w40 engine oil and BV75w80 are similar on the viscocity scale.

In short I'm sure BV oil must suit the BE gearbox, as Peugeot recommended it and used it as standard fill from 1988. That said, the box was designed to run engine oil.

Regardless of what oil you choose to use, I do recommend it is changed regularly...
