Tu5 Tuning -max Possible Bhp?

Recommended Posts

Bam

hi folks,

in the last days, i've tuned a xu10j2 engine with lots of stuff.

as i hold the tuningparts in my hands (machined head, carbs etc.) -i get a idea.

i want a little beasty funcar!

my first car was a tu3 monopoint with 98ihs -and it was absolutly healthly!

a small purse "gti" without the problems of a gti ;D

my question to you is:

what is your know possible max ish/torque from this engine you heart: (maybe are postet her in forum?)

Tu5 1.6 8v

Tu5 1.6 16

with carbs, machined head, cam/s (maybe lightenend flywheel)

i'm not sure, but i've heard that also a 1.6 8v with 110bhp exist?!

thanks + cheers

Personally I wouldn't 'worry' about peak BHP at all, and focus on a reliable engine that performs well across the rev range, delivers decent fuel economy and uses as many OE parts as possible.

By concentrating on those things, I think you'll get a better engine which even if it has 5bhp less than someone else's (which for some reason seems to disappoint some people) performs better overall.

Even if it's a track-only car, where it will be high revving all the time so peak BHP is more important, most of the other principles still apply.

In short, do your homework/research, build it well, build it sensibly and don't expect too much. You'll get what you get.

16v youre talking 220bhp+ n/a, but it depends how long you want it to last and how big your wallett is.

@welshpug

hey thanks for your post.

220 ish???

that sounds pretty good!

(any infos about the cams etc?)

on pieters page (dp-engineering), i've found a 106 gti6 turbo (320bhp) -sounds better!

the kit costs round about 2k!

so i get much power, for "less" money...analog a self induced engine.

hm...

the problem is the german TUV...

if i would buy a 106 xs or rallye with 1360ccm TU3 and would exchange the engine into TU5 1.6 -i would have 90bhp (wow).

a swap into TU5J4/s would be horror (find engine, brakes, TUV etc.)

has anybody flowbenched the head from TU5 1.6 8v?

thanks + cheers

@dr sally you are right (80%)..........

it depends how long you want it to last and how big your wallet is.

...and that's 100% correct!

Dr Sally? ;)

160bhp is possible from the TU5 8v there are a few knocking around! A good cylinder head is the key - i.e not just a flap wheel stuck down the ports to make it look nice. On a well developed engine you dont have to rev it too high either so it'll stay reliable which is a bonus. The 150bhp engines I've seen reach maximum power before 7000rpm.

Mines running around 145 - 150bhp at the moment - Throttle bodies, SRD head, CatCam etc.

For a good flowbench write up for this head, check out the Guy Croft website, he ported a 1400XSi (Pretty much the same head really) and wrote it up on his forum. My SRD head seems to go a bit further as it has combustion chamber modifications too, but I don't know how much difference this would make.

@ross

rrrrr -sounds damn good! :)

thanks for your infos -i will take a look to the croft website.

yeah i think a good head is the key for every engine.

some questions:

- srd head?

- bigger valves possible?

- which rpm's are the stock pistons good for? TU5 1.6 8v (7500rpm = 20,5m/s!)

- ((( CR of 11,5:1 possible? (wiseco pistons), thougt of overbore 80mm and maybe >7500~9000rpm )))

- whats the shortest gearbox (ratio) -or- i'm looking for gearbox/finaldrive ratios (exist any table?!)

thanks guys

SRD = Mark Shillaber of Shillaber Race Design.

Standard rev limit on the TU5J2 and TU5J4 is 7250rpm so I reckon the pistons will be good for that. I have the limiter set to this on my engine and have had no problems.

It's not just the cylinder head, all of the other components need to work in harmony with each other.

i'm from germany -how can i contact him (email or website?)

do you know anything about prices?

my first car was a peugeot 309 1.4 Tu3 monopoint. after i fittet a cam (with my special specs), i've get ~100ps (without any other stuff!)

rev limiter was @ 7600rpm -also,without probs. (with 0w-40 castrol oil)

It's not just the cylinder head, all of the other components need to work in harmony with each other.

info about myself:

my first car was:

peugeot 309 1.4 Tu3 monopoint @ 100bhp

than:

peugeot 309 1.9 gti, @ 145bhp (also selfmade gearbox)

than:

peugeot 309 mi16 @ 180bhp (on wheels!, also selfmade gearbox)

than:

peugeot 309 TCT @ 306bhp / 430nm tourqe...

what i want to say: i'm not a greenhorn, i know what i'm doing -but its a loooong time ago. i've forgotten a lot of my knowledge about pug engines :)

(so, i should like to preventative stop any "couchings" or controversions about engine basics) :D

i've found the gear ratios, i think i will change finaldrive (from 1.1 into 1.6), so i get a very short gearbox ! :D

but, whats about the valves?bigger possible, any infos???

@rossd

which cam do you use?

cheers

whats the difference between:

1.6i TU5JP (NFZ) 1587 cm³ 4 65 kW (89 PS)

1.6i TU5JP (NFT) 1587 cm³ 4 72 kW (98 PS)

one was the early engine, the bigger bhp is the later roller rocker version.
