(car Restoration) 205 Gti 1600 J Reg

Recommended Posts

lukesaddy

Bonjour peoples (see what i did there, french, peugeot, bonjour ... no?)

After 3 106's i got sick of repairing them so i got me a 1.3 fiesta - good honest little car, and after plenty of time looking about i got this as a project car.

I will be getting the car back to mine within the next few days.

Its a J reg (1991/1992) 1600 gti shell which i have big plans for.

The shell has been kicked in by a previous owner down one side and on the bootlid and has no engine, but its got a logbook and is all HPI clear.

Overall plan;

-Full restoration with all rot removed

-All standard parts i keep will be tarted up

-Suspension upgraded

-Interior "rally prepped to FIA/MSA regs"

-Engine upgrade (GTi6 probably)

-Brakes upgraded (including 1900 disc back axle)

I only have the basic overall plan for now, ill go more into detail when i get into it.

The restoration will probably take me 1-2 years depending on funding and wether or not i blow the fiesta runabout up.

Pics to follow ...

The only bent panels are, door, front wing, bootlid and rear 1/4 panel, its only the 1/4 that im worried about.

Is it a particularly clean. rust-free shell?

If not, given the amount of bent panels i'd seriously consider using another, altogether better shell to start with.

baz, i couldnt spot any rot on it, its an ex show car aparently.

the bootlid, door and wing just bolt off so the only real problem one is the rear 1/4 panel.

I finally got the car on monday night :D buzzing !!!

Monday i did no work on it, i put a sheet over it and went out for a cruise.

Tuesday - i got all the rubbish out of the inside - and realised it was full of rat/mouse s*it !!

Wednesday - i hoovered all the s*it out and started taking the dash out (im a bit stuck of how its fastened in on the pass side, the bottom bit is completely free apart from above the glovebox (any ideas anyone ?)

Aim for this week - get dash and carpets out, get it up onto axle stands and remove the looms then jetwash and disinfectant all the insides.

anyway some piccys :unsure:

There's some 10mm nuts holding the dash in from under the scuttle panel, that's probably what's holding it in, there's one either side, then one in the middle of the dash inside the car, under a panel on top of the dash.

Right finally ive got a spare 5 mins to write up some progress from last weekend,

I got the dashboard and the rest of the interior out finally,

I managed to get the doors off 3 of the pins were ok, bloody typically the last one wouldnt come out though haha.

I was then able to finish removing the wiring loom, then the carpets (the soundproofing was all soaking wet and stank but i couldnt see any obvious places it could have come in from :S - job for another day and a hosepipe haha.

wiring loom (interior and engine);

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...0_3349020_n.jpg

nearly there with the stripping (dont worry then halfrauds ripspeed pedals wont be returning on the rebuild);

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...2_3108158_n.jpg

I was surprised how little rot there was on the shell (boot floor, small patch at the strut top and a few small scabs in the engine bay), definately a good strong shell :lol:

(having a much deserved sit down and cuppa in my make-shift garage haha);

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash...3_7283460_n.jpg

My mate pinched the 2 steels off the front so ive hadto use an XSi wheel and a raptor haha;

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...6_3836619_n.jpg

I then turned around and realised i had a big pile of parts on my drive, so i sifted through them, binned the rubbish etc and hadto find somewhere to keep them, as it happens my parents are on holiday so i borrowed their living room :P

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...8_4445194_n.jpg

I then set about removing the fuel tank, bearing in mind its probably been on since 1991 when it was built, i wasnt surprised when the nut heads rounded off and i was left searching for a solution, in the end i decided to grind out the top bolt thats under the rear seat, after this i was struggling with getting the big dumb thing out of position, so out came the crowbar and i hadto make some room under the car to get the leverage on it.

How NOT to remove a fuel tank;

Part 1,

Part 2,

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...7_4604361_n.jpg

At the end of the weekend, i was happy :)

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...5_1471817_n.jpg

My growing collection of scrap bootlids :P

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...3_1719672_n.jpg

I have left all the suspension on the shell so i could get it to my mates garage to have all the welding done. I just wish id left the handbrake on so i could have towed it (his house is only up the road), instead me and my mate hadto push it in rush-hour in the pouring rain haha.

So, its currently in my mates garage getting rally prepped (by this i mean fully seam welded, rot removed, stregnthening plates made and welded in and a rollcage welded in) If you need any welding or similar work doing in Teesside or surrounding areas drop me a message as my mate will be able to do it, the work is top quality and he is a big petrol head and pure car enthusiast, the sort of person you want working on your car, not someone in a bodyshop who hates their job lol.

As soon as i get the rollcage he will be able to crack on and get it back to me, i cant wait :D

Thanks a lot mate, i dont know too much about them really yet, but i bought it as a project to use as a learning curve and to have a nice car at the end of it in a couple of years.

Ive mechaniced on a 205 rallycross car and repaired my last couple of cars myself but nothing on this scale :lol:

Thanks mate, yeh i will make sure it gets finished, the only restraint i have is money really, the longer it takes to build the more NCB ill have on my insurance haha, i cant wait to get it back from my mates to get cracked on with it again/

i went around to see my car yesterday and all the welding is done apart from the rollcage feet.

i should be getting a 10 point cage on monday or tuesday so that will be welded in next week then i can bring it home and start undersealing and painting the insides so it doesnt rot over winter ;)
