205 V's Clio On Track

Recommended Posts

bill

In the market for a track car, i've had various 205 gti's, 1.6,1.9 and a very quick mi16, and also had a clio mk1 valver and a williams, my last mi16, felt like it was going to kill me, anything above 60mph, had no trust in the car whatsoever in the handling department, straghtline speed was another story, it flew! so i want an mi16 205 or a williams/172 etc, so my question, is a 205mi16 capable of keeping up with a williams on track, do they handle as well?

cheers

If you dont have worn or rubbish suspension the 205 will be more than a match

a 205 mi16 would always beat a williams hands down all day every day a 172 would be a closer match

Pointless question, does not matter about the car it's the driver

true. I see sometimes 10 seconds a lap difference in Kart racing over a single lap between the best and worst. Thats with the same engines, chassis and tyres.

Put that on a 2 mile track with all the variables associated with road cars and the time difference could potentially be huge.

So I think the faster car will be the driver who does not let his ego write cheques his body cannot cash :)

I feel wrong for instantly recognising that line... I blame my sister.

To be honest, if you don't feel safe in a 205 then you won't be as quick in one. all 3 cars are a pretty close match, so for the average joe it will mostly boil down to the confidence you have in the car rather than the car itself. If your last 205 Mi16 was just a bad example then don't read into it too much, but if you can try and have a test drive of all 3 before making your mind up.

doesnt matter what car you start with you can make it quick. Iv'e always found the williams to be a tripod in my way. 172 much faster but have no idea what mods they had and its a trackday, zondas get in your way and old escorts fly past.

Just get the one you like the most.

I think you need to think about a number of factors before you buy, as follows:-

1. Is it a pure track car or will you use it on the road, maybe every day?

2. Are you going to modify it (shocks, engine, etc), in which case which is more cost effective for your budget?

3. Are you going to fit a cage? It can have a big impact on strength of a shell and handling if done right!

a well set up in the handling department 205 mi16 should run rings round a clio which ever one!!

mine always did,but like some one has mentioned, everything to do with suspension on a 205 needs to be in decent condition otherwise i 'personally' feel they can be shocking and a right handfull

my last 205 had terrible handling, really put me off, but i know they can be awesome, if i drove one that handled well, my confidence would be the same in both cars i imagine, ie.it would get ragged to death on track :)

purely a track car only, i'm hoping to buy one thats already got everything done to be honest, if it has a cage then good, if not it could be on the list of things to do

A mate of mine was on a track day at brands hatch, him driving a 1.6 Skipbrown 205 (cammed and other head work) and there was a clio 197 which was trying it's best to keep it.

On the straights, the clio wouldn't catch it and on the corners again clio was waaaayyy behind. But again depends on driver.

Renault are generous with there power figures, on the last RR day a tidy 40000 mile 172 was only 160.

My mates gota 16v clio with a williams lump in , we put the engine in , the weight of it was absolutly ridicolous ! 4 of us struggled, wher as an mi can be man handled by 2 of us !

The car goes well but has nothing on an mi or gti6 d 205.

As for the handling, no match for a well looked after 205.

Dodgy suspension on a 205 is by far scary. A well maintained tight one gives so mucch confidence.

I'm sure maany others will agree.,

I'd get the one you prefer to be honest, there isn't much else between them as long as you do the right things. It's totally possible to ruin the handling of a 205 with the wrong modifications, as it is a Clio, but the right mods will yield massive improvements on both. I reckon the difference between similarly set-up 205's and Clio's would be too close to call for most drivers.

They always are, the 1*2's barely ever make their name.

I would say my (or rather my girlfriend's) 182 was a pretty quick one, it had a big power hit when you hit 5000rpm, 90-120 in 4th was very impressive. So definintely 170bhp or so considering it's pulling more weight than my 205 and has longer gearing. Axle tramp was terrible though on the maybe TWO times I set off quickly in it. Fantastic car though, but not a 205...

The performance is very similar on all the cars mentioned, although I've never been troubled by a ClioSport at a trackday in my 205Mi16 but then probably back to the "drivers" again. Although I do remember two "rivals" at Oulton Park from the cliosport forum and gti6 forum, each had their own respective forum trackday regular with track spec cars and I seem to remember being faster. The quickest Clio I've seen on track was just a normal 16v (which are quick in their own right anyway).

Most of that definitely the driver, the reason he couldn't catch on the straights would be all to do with the corner/exit speed of the 205 as it's probably putting out almost 80bhp less than the Clio.
