Buying 205 Gti 1.9

Recommended Posts

Guest bnr32

Just put a deposit down for a sorrento green 93 205 gti..

its down about 150xxxkms, 2 owners and comes with service history since 2002.

Got a few things thats been making me think twice about it.

First of all i got no idea about these cars, i've been used to jap cars so when i popped the engine i couldn't even find the oil cap lol ;)

When i did find the oil cap, the guy said that its also a breather as well and there was a build up under the cap. Is this normal???

Also the idle rpm seemed a bit low.. is that normal? fixable??

Handling seemed fine,, and the box shifted pretty good as well.

Is there anything in particular i should look out for engine wise??

Also.. I read in the buyers guide that when starting the engine from cold, the oil pressure guage should go to 3/4 then drop down to 1/4..

when starting it up a lil warm.. the gauge went to just under 1/2 then slowly dropped..

does that sound right??

Apprently the build up under the cap is normal. You can replace the cap quite cheaply if its a concern. A forum search will help you there. From my understanding it happens when you take lots of short trips. So the next logical thing to suss out is if the previous owner has any mechanical sympathy cause if he's taking a lot of short trips and thrashing the engine while its cold it wouldn't be very healthy.

205 idle has a tendancy to hunt. Mine hunts from 900 - 1100. I think thats about average. What rpm is your car idling at?

Regarding your engine and oil pressure question. People smarter than me will soon post up and give you more insight.

went and had another look today, the engine oil pressure gauge sits at just under 1/2 when warm.. is that fine?

Also with the build up in the oil filler cap..can i just clean that up or do i have to replace the cap?? and does any of that sludge from the build up fall back into the engine??

First thing im going to do when i get it is a full service. So changing oil and oil filter. air filter and fuel filter. spark plugs and leads. and flush the coolant system.

Is this a fairly simple task to do yourself? Normally i wouldn't ask and just go right ahead but being a pug, i've never worked on 1 before so just wanted to double check.

also do you think i should change the g.box oil as well??

Thanks.

Half way is fine for hot oil, it gets thinner as it warms up so pressure drops slightly.

The emulsion build up is normal as the oil filler is a remote tower/pipe rather than on the cam cover. As such the vapours don't get quite as hot to burn off and build up in the filler cap and breather pipes, especially if you do lots of short journeys/cold weather etc. You can replace the cap, but i'd just clean it up unless it's damaged and not sealing well. If it's really bunged up, take off the breathers pipes and give them a clean too. There should be a metal gauze in the cap, but it's fine to run without this.

Basic servicing is easy, do a search or buy a Haynes manual (if you have them on Oz). :)

Servicing the 205 is very standard. If you've done it on Jap cars before then you should be fine.

A few things that you should know:

- You need to get yourself a European sump plug adapter to undo the sump plug. You can get it from a peugeot dealer or a tool shop (or if you live close then borrow mine).

- Aussie delivered 205's have a remote oil filter. Attached to the gearbox. Be careful when undoing the filter as this body has a tendency to break around the bolt area.

- Haynes manual, aussiefrogs.com and this website are your friends. Absolutely every single possible thing has been asked and answered on 205's from these resources so a quick search and you will have your answers.

It doesn't hurt to change the gearbox oil. I'd do it if there was no history of it being done. Theres an exellent post on changing the BE3 gearbox oil with some a quality common gearbox oil and nulon you can get from Repco on aussiefrogs.com.

Earlier I didn't realise that you were from Victoria. If you live anywhere near the eastern suburbs of Melbourne send me a PM and I can help you out for the first service.

205s usually suffer with idleing problems it can be a number of things, not usually serious just needs a little tlc I expect.

The clogged oil breathers wonmt help an idle so a good clean out could sort it.

205s don't usually suffer with rust or corrosion but just behind the headlights on the inner wings usually suffer wiith it, especially the side with the washer bottle,m definatly worth a quick look.

Also look at the camber angle of the rear road wheels as a really noticible positve camber could show radious arm bearings that are worn.

Other than that the 205s are really good and repairing is very straight foward and basic, and parts are cheap !

Enjoy, no other veichle brings a smile to my face like a 205 !!!

Negative sorry ! Radious arms are not a nice job, but can be done with a little paitence.

Yes, but it was more to the point of saving anyone else from posting regurgitated info when he's read it all anyway! :)

You will get some mixed responses for part availibility and pricing in Australia for 205 gti's.

I think I read somewhere that there were only really double digit sales for 1993 205's in Australia so you will not find one at your local wrecker easily.

That being said, the 205's share a lot of parts between other models of that era which there are plenty of in Australia. You can take body parts from 205 si's, you can take gearboxs from 306's, 405's and many citroens as well as engine parts from 405's and bx's. Frankensteining parts is not uncommon. There are plenty of aftermarket parts available. Mostly from Europe so be prepared for silly postage costs.

Specialised peugeot wreckers also have plenty of cars to take parts from and theres a few in SE Melbourne.

Also, peugeot has a surprisingly good stock of new OEM parts for the 205.

Regarding pricing, compared to my friends daily jap cars my parts are about 10%-20% more expensive but compared to my friends jap sports cars my parts are consistently cheaper.

In summary, be prepared to shop around but I don't think you will ever not be able to find something that you need.

So i should be able to find parts without to much hassle then. That's good to hear.

Hopefully i won't have to chase up parts anytime soon anyway.

I'm picking up the car tomorrow then i'm gonna organise a roadworthy cert and rego.

From what i can see, it needs a new front windscreen, apparantly the rear engine mount is shagged but hopefully i can get away with that. Rocker cover gasket looks like its leaking but i hope its just an old oil stain. If i have to change to rocker cover gasket, i might just buy a full gasket kit and change all of them.

Can i buy parts like gaskets n stuff from Repco/Bursons or should i always go factory for those parts ??

Then give it a full service and then take it to the mountains!!

Cant wait!!!!

Rear engine mount replacement is a PITA. Best place for aftermarket mounts is BakerBM.

Parts like gaskets sets or anything specific to 205's you won't be able to find at Repco or Bursons. Your best bet is factory or french car specialists such as Caravelle or EAI. Both in Box Hill.

sweet i'll check it out. thanks!

My oil filler cap seems to be missing a hose.

Theres meant to be 2 hoses on the oil filler cap right? I have 1 hose on my one which goes to the throttle body and the other pipe is missing a hose altogether.

Is there meant to be a hose there? and where is it meant to go??

Can't comment on that as its too dark and too cold to check atm. It sounds right though. It connects to a nozzle on the corner pipe between the afm and throttle body?

I think its about time we see some pics of the car :)

Not that I know of. Just host them up on imageshack and post up the links either through the insert image function on the reply screen or through forum BB code which imageshack will give you.

i'll give it a go.

Also i think i have the wrong afm on my engine.

All the pics that i've looked at, the afm is different to the one i have.

Everything seems fine though. Should i be worried?

Once i figure out how to post a pic, i'll show you.
