Future Values Of The Gti

Recommended Posts

djc

My first real post on this site, so here we go...

Where do you see the value of the 205 GTI going in the near future? We probably all agree that they are a modern classic along with Mk1 & MK2 Golf GTI's. A specialist dealer I know in the Golf scene regularly sells a MK2 GTI for £4k +, (the now defunct?) Just GTI's were always £3k ish for a sometimes questionable car. A quick look on Pistonheads revealed Marcus Fothergill asking £6k for a 102,000 mile miami 1.9 using a description of fully restored whilst Hollybrook sports cars have sold a rather nice looking black 1.9 with 58,000 miles & bundles of history also for £6k.

The question being, are these realistic prices today & how much are they likely to rise over the next 2/5/10 years?

Miles

Very, A friend of mine is selling a few at the moment and good example's with low milage (Sub 80k) & get's £3000.00 without any problems at all so say 1 owner orginal car's are worth allot more, Well providing it isn't advertised on here as everyone is tight :P

Having restored a few 205's it costs more than 6k I can tell you that, Maybe a quick freshen up and no more.

There was actually a topic very like this fairly recently! :P

Generally i think they're going to hold value well, and go up in the next few years, similar to how Escorts etc did.

The thing is Miles, how many one owner cars are there? Not many would be my guess. My thoughts are the more owners a car has had the more chances there are of corners being cut on maintainance/repair. I maybe wrong. For sure, A low owner car, with sub 80k on the clock with a reasonable history has to be worth a lot more than a 160k ten owner car but just how much are people prepared to pay in todays financial climate for a good GTI. Would your friends £3k cars of today be worth £5k in 3 years, £10k in 2020?

As Miles said, original cars with original paint command good money. I know of a 1.6 with 80k that sold for over £6k. An indication is if you look on ebay now, all those bits that people threw away in the past are commanding good money; red reflective rear panels, headlight covers, good condition airboxes, air flow meter brackets etc.

They will go up in price but not rapidly and will not continue escalating as they are not exactly rare with early 10k GTIs either taxed or SORNed (all depends how busy Baz has been!!). It is the market that you need to look at for the value, which is why nothing is expensive on here. The people who busy modern classics are usually into their 40's and want to buy the car they had in their early 20's - a mid life crisis one could say and much more wife friendly than a Harley!

The future classics I predict are the 106 GTI and to a lesser extent a Saxo VTS. Try finding either of those that has not been molested as the 106 is in less numbers than the 205 I reckon.

Oh an 10 years, a £5k 205 will probably be £10k at a push, depends on the availability of fuel!

If thats the case we should all buy, buy, buy. Our cars would be better than any pension going. A good friend of mine bought both my Mk1 mexico & my Series 1 RS Turbo off me, when I questioned him of their current worth he believed the Turbo (sold with approx 56k & history to prove 6 years ago for £4.5k) to now be worth in the region of £8-8.5k and the MK1 (sold 3 years ago for approx £5.5k) now to be worth circa £10k. We often remark about all the Mk1/Mk2 Escorts we could have bought for pennies 15 years ago & their values today!

Can never really tell what is going to happen. My opinion, look after your GTI, its a modern classic not too unreliable, and for its engine size (mine is 1.9) dosent use exessive fuel, That iswhat people are going to want! the only way is up for all our lil beasties!

The only thing that worries me is the originality thing. Old Escorts will still go for good money if they've been stripped, lowered, had new engines put in them etc. etc. even though they're not 'concours' (obviously original ones will go for more than a bodged engine swap...)

I'm very tempted to dump a gti-6 engine in mine (and I'll do a bloody good job of it too!) but you always see original examples going for more than modded ones, even ones where there are no bodges and the owner has done a good job. People prize the originality.

Still, i guess they're still cheap cars in the whole scheme of things so it's important not to worry too much one way or the other!

They will never make enough money for a pension alternative, but I spend as much a I can afford and hope the value goes up eough to not worry about the amount Ive spent:-) Also I enjoy going to the psooc meetings & pugfest, going for a little retro blast occasional with the sunroof open!

I believe\hope that an original example will be worth more than a gti6 converion in the long run though:-)

I was at a client of mine a fortnight ago in Winchester and amonst the various cars he owns was a really straight and tidy 1.6 in cherry red with 2 owners and sub-60k miles. 1.9 wheels but he had the originals otherwise the car was standard throughout and really nice and tidy. He sold it for £2,500 to pretty much the first person who saw it I think.

I was tempted but luckily(?!) didn't have the cash - saying that, I was offered my old car back not that long ago and the BMW was close to getting sold, seriously. I think good cars will make strong money in the future - ignore the "classic" tag, as the bottom line is that they were a well respected car back in the day and those who didn't buy back then are starting to look at them seriously now.
