[misc_work] 1.9 Gti Resto / Track And Road Toy Project

Hello!

well im new to all this Peugeot stuff, never had one before, although always wanted a 205 gti and ive finally got hold of one. Here is a little thread on the car and what ive done so far.

I got the car from eBay in November 2009 as a runner with 6mths T&T for £750. Not a bad price, but all the bushes at the front end are shot, so it wonders around a bit and has a bit of play in the steering. nice easy fixes to all the problems though, and the engine pulls sweetly, no smoke, doesnt use water or oil and goes well.

I was intending to strip the 205 down as much as possible, put a cage and a bucket seat in and track it, but the interior is so tidy and the car has charmed me too much to do that, so im going to go somewhere in between and have it as a useable driver and a track toy as well.

The interior is really mint, no wear on the seats at all which is unusual, and the back seats look like new

Ive driven about 250 miles since ive had it and its awesome! People say you shouldnt ever meet your idols and as ive wanted a white, 1.9 since i was about 15 i was slightly worried i would be disappointed, but now ive got one i love it, and think i should have had one years ago!

So the plans are,

Phase 1:

All new bushes on the front end, new cam belt, water pump, tensioners etc. full service, new tyres, have a look over the rear beam ( a whole minefield i know nothing about and am slightly apprehensive about!) new brakes, braided hoses, change gearbox fluid. After this im gonna drive it for a while and see how it goes, do a couple of track days etc.

Phase 2:

Roll cage, (may keep the rear seats) new carpets, maybe some plush bucket seat, harnesses. upgrade the brakes (if needed) to GTi-6 setup or simular.

Phase 3:

Maybe... GTI-6 conversion, thats a way off yet but something i like the look of.

UPDATE AS OF 2nd Jan 2010:

Today’s task was wishbones off, new bushes in, new anti roll bar bushes in, but didn’t quite go to plan!

Got the lower wishbones off without too much bother, but noticed that the ball joint gaitor was split and the joint a bit notchy, so rather than fit the bushes I brought, im going to buy some complete OEM wishbones with bushes already fitted. Ive read some advise that the bushes I brought were not that great anyway, so it’s probably best to stick to the OEM parts. So, new wishbones needed (internet shopping here I come!)

Next was the anti roll bar. Was a tricky s0d to remove, but eventually dropped the subframe slightly and took the whole thing out. Then we noticed the new bushes I brought are slightly different to the originals. It seems the OEM part has a groove cut out of one side and on the ARB there is a raised notch to stop the bar/bush sliding. The new bushes I had didnt have this groove and therefore won’t fit. I read the manual (should have done that to start with!) and it says the are 'sided' with an orange one with the groove mentioned above, and a yellow/white on without. So the 'new' bushes are in the bin, and im going with OEM parts once again. A trip to my local pug dealer is needed!

Also noticed that both trackrod ends have split gaitors, so need a couple of those aswell

Feeling a little deflated, we decided to have a good look over the rest of the car. There is a bit of rust on the passenger side front arch, but nothing too nasty, only surface, so we will sort that out. Also some nasty 'scotch locks' in the wiring which will be gone soon, and the headlights are not original (they are etched with the reg number of a D reg car, mines an E and has a different reg number) so I will replace these too. They move about alot anyway as the plastic arm that holds them to the adjuster has broken.

So all in all not very successful! But atleast now I know the old girl a bit better, and there were no nasty surprises, just a long shopping list of things to buy! Im definitely sticking with OEM parts from now on though, and DO NOT recommend the Polysport stuff I brought from Rallydesign. Bit gutted the ARB bushes don’t even fit, that’s just poor quality.

Where do you guys buy your wishbones, bushes, trackrod ends from? Are eurocarparts any good or do you recommend someone else?

Anyway, here are some pics, i'll update again once the next shipment of parts arrives!

Cheers for reading

Ross

That looks like a cracking little car for the money! The leather seats are in good nick!

Don't be deflated about having to do some bits and pieces, at the end of the day, its a 20 year old car, there are always going to be things that need doing.

Is there actually anything wrong with the headlights?? They look OK in the pics.

Worth having a go at the rusty bits behind the headlights while you're in there, to nip it in the bud. Look a bit further back too, along the join with the inner arch (behind the washer bottle and where the jack is supposed to be mounted on the opposite side)

This looks a great little thing and possibly too good to mess with in my view.

I'd replace all that is worn and enjoy it as it is - there are too few standard 205s as it is.

Just my 2ps worth!

Cheers fellas, I'm really looking forward to getting the car on the road, leaning more towards a resto back to factory fresh rather than a track toy now, maaybe somewhere inbetween like a r26-r or something?!

As for where I am, I'm just south of Norwich so look out for the car in the spring

Update as of 23rd Jan 2010

Hi All. well its beed a while since i wrote on here, but ive been slowly collecting all the parts I needed to make some progress.

All my christmas money is spent 4 times over but ive brought som great stuff. Since Christmas ive brought:

New lower wishbones

Track rod ends

drop link arms

anti roll bar bushes

(All from Miles, thanks very much for the great service :))

A spare set of 1.9 speedlines, a GTI steering wheel and gearnob from a fella on turbosport breaking a 205 which turned out to be immaculated and cost the grand sum of £95 delivered B)

A bundle of Motaquip engine parts, cam belt, fan belt, water pump, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, rocker cover gasket, and a thermostat.

Today was the day to fit all the suspension parts, and it went without a hitch. all the parts just flew on, and i went for a spin afterwards and ive finally got a 205 GTI that drives in a straight line and handles well B) im really happy that its feels soooo much better now, its confidence inspiring at last rather then plain scary!

So all parts on (pics below) and also managed to peg the engine ready for the cam belt change.

Next sunday will be engine day, with a massive pile of motaquip parts finding there way onto the little beasty!

Anyway, thats all for now, more next sunday!

Ross

Update as of 10th March 2010

Well its been ages since i updated this. To be honest ive been busy playing with my Focus ST thats just come out of storage and id forgotten how rapid it is. However i have managed to change the cam belt, water pump and tensioner on the 205 since the last update and have a full weekend planned this week to give it a full service, refurbish the wheels, change the pads and fluid, and fit some braided lines so it should be in full healt soon.

Full update with pics to follow on monday.

Afternoon all, well its been a while since i last updated this, lots has been done since! List of jobs done since last update include

New water pump,

New cam belt

New tensioner

New fan belt

Full service

All new filters (inc fuel)

New Plugs

Fitted Strut Brace

and finally refurbed a full set of speedlines. Pics below.

They came out really well, considering the corrosion they had on them, but to be fair the actual condition of the wheels was great, no scuffs or damage, just alot of elbow grease needed.

Pics attached.

So i can now actually start driving the thing! ive had it since last novmber and so far only driven it home from the purchase! I hope it lives upto expectations, sure it will.

Next steps are a set of decent tyres for the new wheels, and then see what tails of woe lie on the rear beam. thats the only thing ive not paid any attention to yet, so it could be interesting, especially as the front end was completely knackered.

Also would like a new exhaust as the old standard manifold is cracked, but thats a while away yet.

Anyway, more to come in the next couple of weeks, hopefully some pics of it on the norfolk roads!

cheers

Ross

Hello All,

Well ive been playing the 205 today, gave it a proper wash and wax, and took it for a good spin round the lanes of Norfolk.

It was the first time ive ever driven the car in anger (and first time ive ever driven a 205 gti properly!) and i absolutely loved it! What an awesome machine, its so nice to drive a car tht feels honest, simple and basic, but give such amazing feedback of exactly what its doing, and feels fast (even though its not that amazing by todays standards) it really made me smile and i now fully understand the whoel old school appeal of the GTI.

Ive attached some pics ive taken with my other car, the ST is the real daily driver and power house, with 260bhp and a lot of various upgrades, its a weapon. But the 205 can teach it a thing or two about handling!

anyway, enjoy.
