Mi16 Wont Start

Recommended Posts

Peetypug

i've just bought myself another project

its got tax and mot so i want to get it running as its been a long time since i drove a gti :(

i only picked it up today so haven't had much chance to have a look at it yet

basically its a 1.9 mi16 running on the 1.9 gti loom

it turns over but wont start

my first thoughts are

1, no fuel - i haven't heard it prime

2, no spark - not checked for it yet

any other ideas welcome

but i may take a 1.9 mi16 loom ecu and AFM if theres one going cheap

so come on ladies and gents, please get me back behind the wheel of a gti

Has it ever run in its current setup? If it has, and nothing has changed since, then it should narrow things down somewhat.

Otherwise, normal checks - has it got spark, is the fuel pump running, is it injecting fuel, and does it have good compression. Once we know that, it'll be easier to point you at the likely culprits.

yes it has run, it was running for a while but then got parked up in jan/feb and not started since

could it be old petrol?, or even no petrol at all?

PETE! My dear friend and now father.

You are asking us to speculate when you haven't really done your homework. You know better; help us out. Then we can help you.

well old fuel (if it ran in jan then it should run now) won't be an issue, my integrale still runs on 2 yr old petrol! but no petrol at all could make it tricky to start. . . .. Try and start it and then crack a fuel rail connection and see if fule comes spraying out. You'll know straight then if there's fuel and if it's getting pressured up by the pump

I prefer to take the injectors out as a complete rail and then aim them at some cardboard. Can check if they're all working as well then. Obviously take care with petrol flying about and make sure you don't have a spark plug out and sitting on top of the engine at the same time or something silly!

Seriously, my 309 started on 5 year old or older super unleaded-ive heard the tales of what happens to 'old super' but I think it must be told by 'old wives' lol

its got more holes than swiss cheese for a start!

other than that its a standard 1905cc Mi16 running a dizzy convertor sat at the correct angle thanks to a rewelded exhaust manifold and heavily chopped fan housing, 1.6 be3 box, cobra monaco bucket seat, omp cage (same as yours) gti6 brakes

Well im happy to come and give you a hand if needed fella, give me shout
