Escort Van Starting Probs

Recommended Posts

lfallgti

hi guys,

i have a escort 1.8d van that is reluctant to start on the key. the van will bump ok, and only starts after lots of cranking on the key when warm, when left for an hour it needs bumping again. the battery has been charged and has new glow plugs. the engine runs good when it does start. any suggestions as to why it wont start on the key are appreciated.

thanks

Does it start from cold?

After being left for an hour what does it do when you try and start it with the key?

no, it just cranks from cold and flattens the battery. the same as if it was left for a while.

Had a similar problem all be it on my 206 HDi, not to big on diesel's but 3 injectors were down to 40% of flow rating and 1 was completely dead. Would run once bumped but wouldn't start on the key.

Either glow plugs u/s, diesel pump on its way out, or down on compression are my guesses.

i'm thinking the diesel pump is at fault. but dont really want to spend too much money on it. there is no diesel squirting in the injectors when cranking btw.

is there 12v getting to the stop solenoid when cranking?

ive taken the plunger bit out of the solenoid to eliminate that, so it should always be open. ive just given it a good run to charge the battery but i'll have to wait until the morning to see if it'll start on the key. p.s yes i do have to stall it now to stop it. :D

Do the glow plugs actually work? Take one out and watch it glow, wear gloves!

I had a simular thing on my escort van. I checked and adjusted the fuel pump timing with a dti and it improved it.
