Quaife Quick Rack Questions

Recommended Posts

Paul_13

I heard the square type are a barsteward to get hold of, thankfully Alan_m gave me a bearing for mine :o

I've got the rack off the car at the moment, going to have a quick check of the condition of the hubs etc and try and get it right... for once

I tried everywhere to get a bearing but i couldnt find one, i then phoned Quaife to ask what bearing they recomended but they couldnt help me either, even when i questioned why they would make it to an unknown spec. I ended up getting the pinion ground down in a cylinderical grinder so that i could fit a 6003 bearing over it.

I would imagine that if the rack is centred and gives that result in track rod end lengths, that the subframe is bent.

I can't see what I would be missing to be honest, firstly I turned the wheel (when the rack was connected) to find the middle e.g. equal lock-lock etc.

Then the wheels were way out with the tracking, I adjusted the TRE to suit and ended up with the picture above ^

Assuming you weren't "centralising" the steering WHEEL and rather counting the turns from one end to the other and finding the the centre (whilst ignoring the orientation of the steering wheel) then something is longer on one side.

There should be two separate issues;

1. Centralising the tracking and wheels as you can ignore the fact the steering rack moves at this point; think of it as a solid bar passing through the car with adjustable TREs.

2. More lock one way or the other shouldn't really be related to the above but might happen if the rack (ie the actually toothed rack) is not in the right position or somehing is preventing it moving fully one way - but not susre how this can happen.

On the standard rack there is a plastic bump stop which stops the rack from bottoming out, I used this on the quaife rack and pinion. I wonder if this will be limiting the travel?

Although when it was off the car it didnt seem to be limiting anything.

I had a look at the subframe today and it didnt look bent, but cant really tell without another one along side it.

Being on the car doesn't help either.

^ It was.

Normally I swap like for like when working on a car, this time it caught me out.

This little b()gger was limiting the travel :D
