Timing Belt Tension?

how can you properly tension the timing belt even without the tool?

When you've done a few you tend to get a feel for how tight they should be - a usual good rule of thumb is that you should be able to twist the belt through 90 degrees on the longest run using light finger pressure.

Ant's got it spot on, i've tensioned mine up withought the "special tool" loads of times using the aformentioned method and it's allways worked, never had a belt slip or snap through over tensioning.
