Less Roll At Rear

Recommended Posts

rapidcossie

Take a look at this pic.

2746689851a10666321137l.jpg

To me the car looks to be softer at the rear than the front.

The car runs a standard 205 front end with bilstiens and a 309 rear axle/torsion bar etc with bilsteins.

The car does understeer rather than oversteer.

What best way of reversing this?

Bigger torsion bar or thicker anti roll bar?

cheers

cheers for all the replys guys but im inder the impression that the ARB runs thru the beam and that all others will be a different length and that you cant cut an ARB and reweld?

you can cut and weld an end plate if you use a 306 ARB in a 309 or 205 beam.

There is no reason why not, if you look at a 206 GTI you will find that one end of the rear anti roll bar has its plate welded on permanently.

About welding an end plate on, this is standard on a 206.

Has it actually got an anti roll bar fitted? I don't think I've ever seen that much body roll apart from on non-GTis. Especially with a 309 rear beam it should sit very flat even with the standard 309 torsion bars and ARB.

On a tight corner like that it should be almost lifting the inside rear wheel; I'd check youre end plates or the tube inside for an anti roll bar!!

Could that pic be an illusion as you're riding the curb? Also could there be some engine braking?

Further to that, whilst it could be misleading, the picture looks to me like the inside wheel is fractionally in the air after (I assume) launching off the curb - that being the case makes trying to comment on the rear roll somewhat meaningless, although as per CW's comment, I'd be checking the rear ARB as there looks to be far more droop on the inside rear wheel than I'd expect from a 20mm rear ARB (as standard on 309 GTi beams)

Id also say get measuring the tb and arb sizes in your rear beam.

ARB is defo in the beam as the mechanic commented on how small it was when he was lowerin the car.

In the pic I have yet to hit the kerb.

The car is very understeery and practically never lift off over steers even if heavily provoked.

Anyone got any ARB/ torison bars for sale?

Worth checking the size still, as base model 309's have a skinny ARB that won't really do very much compared to the GTi one.

cheers Anthony.

If it is a base model 309 beam it wouldnt suprise me considering some of the other bodges I have found on the car.

How would you recommend upgrading the rear?

Sorry to but in...

So if you source a 306 Gti ARB, you can literally cut one end off, so its the right length, and weld it to the end plate. Installing as normal, with the other end plate sitting on as usual ?

Normal mig ok ? Not sure what there made of tbh.
