Is This A Serviceable Beam?

Recommended Posts

jimistdt

A quick question for anyone whos rebult a few beams please.

I've just been and had a look at a beam I've got in the shed, I've had it a while but today I decided to give it a wipe down and have a proper look at it. I gave the Shafts a little rub with some 400 wet and dry soaked with Plusgas just to get rid of a little surface rust.

Look good to me, there are some witness marks where it has been in use before, but I reckon it is good to reuse. Check the bearings v carefully as I have seen some that are free to rotate but have slight flats on the rollers. TBH for what they cost I'd think about swapping them.

looks like you dont need new shafts anyway

Have the needle bearings left any impressions in the beam tube or shafts?

Shafts look OK from what I can see in the pictures, but as a matter of course replace the seals and bearings before you put it back together

Happy Days!

Thanks Tom and Baz for the quick responses.

I've just had another look at the bearings and when i wiped my finger over them they looked like new, no dirt in between the rollers. But I will heed the advice and get some more bearings and seals :D

I'm really pleased about that its a bit of a faf trying to get a pair of arm shafts these days.

as above, looks very good.

you can get a bearing+seal kit from peugeot/citroen for about £30+ vat, if there's any sign of wear/polishing at all I'd be tempted to press the shafts out and fit them back in rotated 180 degrees, but they look fine.

up to date prices are

513145 bearing £8.01 each

513249 bearing £8.33 each

515408 seal £4.26 each

all plus vat, and i haven't put the price up for the metal ring the seal sits in

I'd say the pin with the marks on really needs replacing, Not something I would use unless dare I say it for a car I was selling
