you can get battery/alternator testers for around £10. All you have to do with them is clip them onto the battery and lights come on to tell what is happening.

Or

get a multimeter from Argos again around £10,

to test the alternator

1: set the multimeter to test DC volts

2:with the car running, put the black lead to earth and the red to +.

3:you should have around 14.4 v. you may have to pick the revs up a bit to get this.

4:Turn on the lights, heater fan and rear heated screen, test the voltage again it should be above 12.5 volts.

First of all check the alternator belt and its tension if all is ok then you will need a multimeter, set it to DC volts, start the car put the red lead of the multimeter on the positive terminal of the battery and the black on the earth, the reading should be somewhere around 14 to 14.5volts,now check it again with all the electrical consumers turned on and it should be around 13 to 13.5volts,if any of the readings are very low (12volts or close to it) then keep the black lead on the battery and put the red lead on the thick wire coming out of the back of the alternator and repeat the test if its still low then you have a poorly alternator.

Hope that helps
