A Few Questions: Stem Seal Advice/compression Test Results

Just ran a comp. test at full temp/throttle open with no oil in bores:

 

(cambelt on left) 175 175 179 175 (dizzy on right)

 

Was pleased, looks ok to me. Are these figures right for a 1360? So what does a compression test tell about an engine?

 

Also, I'm assuming the oil-burning is related to stem-seals; I've searched forum & read Haynes manual but I'm unclear as to whether the valve-train/rockers need removing to replace the seals? Is it simply a case of removing rocker-cover and oil pan, then use a spring compressor and pliers to remove the seals?

 

A brief step-by-step would be helpful :)

You need to remove the head, the rockers, the valve springs, the valves. Then you can get at the valve stem seals. Whilst the valves are out you should give them a good clean, possibly a good idea to put new valve springs in as well because the old ones can get quite tired. When you re fit it all you might want to lap the valves back in to ensure a good seal.

Oh, so can I not do it with the head on the car and fill the bores with string to stop the valves falling in? If it's a head-off job I'd rather take it to a garage as I use it daily. I have a few more questions:

 

1. Could a garage do this in a day?

2. I'm guessing labour would be £150 plus price of seals: how much would a head clean-up/valve re-cut be on top of this?

3. How much would a simple port/polish/replace springs job be? Or would all parts need to be replaced in situ so they wear at the same rate?

4. Are there any shops around E.Sussex that specialise in headwork?

 

The thing is, bottom line I want the engine to stop burning oil and am willing to pay a garage to sort it. I must use the car daily so it needs to be quick. If it dosen't take too much longer/cost too much I might consider some headwork while it's off the car as the bottom-end seems healthy looking at the compression-test. I'd only take it further if I knew there would be a good gain in power/engine life.

 

What do you guys think would be the best thing to do? Need some advice.

Ah, just noticed QEP are just down the road, so sent an enquiry asking:

 

Price of new stem seal re-fit;

Any further mods from which I would see benefit using standard cam.

if the garage is workin to book times be a lot more than £150 . book time for valve job on a tu is 8.5 hours
