Help! Cranksaft Seals

Recommended Posts

yanto

As some of you know i've got an oil leak, changed the sump gasket 3 times trying to solve the problem but its still leaking from the flywheel side. Taken the flywheel guard off and oil seems to be running down the flywheel. So i guess its the crank seal?

Are they hard to do what tools do i need and what should u change while im there- (dont want to do that and find its leakin from somewhere else round there)

Where do i get the parts from? Do i need to drop the box to do it?

How i do it??? Got a haynes but i've never done somethin like this before -anyone in south wales fancies gettin they're hands dirty?? :D

it'll be either the crank seal, in which case you'll need to remove the box and flywheel assembly (don't forget new bolts and threadlock...)

OR, it could be the hockey stick seals that sit down the side of the main bearing cap that makes up part of the end of the block, this would need the box and flywheel assembly off as before, and also the sump (replace the crank seal as part of the job seeing as you'll have the flywheel off)

either way you wont know till you have it apart.

crank seal you could get from any motor factors, GSF do O.E branded, or Peugeot / Citroen, the hockey stick seals I think would be a dealer or engine specialist part.

Do i really need new bolts? How will i able to tell if its the hockey seals? The oil is on the sump side of the of the flywheel so would that indicate more to the hockey seals than the crank seals? If so can i just take off the sump to get at them or do i still need box out?

Sorry for the dumb questions but im new to this!

Cheers

How much would a garage charge for this wroughly?

Just another thought would over tigthenin the sump cause the oil leak, Havent got torque wrench so done them up hand tight-any tighter i would have to put a bit of pressure behind it. Could i have over tightened it?

Cheers

both the seals are on the block side of the flywheel

you would need to take the flywheel off to do the hockey stick seals as the crank seal is fitted into the bearing cap, I have a picture I can post later if you get no luck, off to work!

Long weekend for Yanto

I might have got away with it (hopefully)

Speakin to a mechanic i know said bout some oil additive you can use, he said the reason they can leak is because the seals get old and brittle but this oil is suppose to make them supple again therefore sealin again, hes had quite alot of success with it so i thought Its worth a try!

Anyone heard of it-its made by lucas. I'll get some pics up of it later.

sounds like a temporary fix thats only really delaying the inevitable mate, the seals are probably near 20 years old after all, get that engine stripped and the seals changed for nice new ones!
