Dayve 0 Posted January 28, 2009 Hi Guys, I'm looking to stick some GTi wheels onto my Cj (try and smarten it up a bit!) Is it a straight swap for the wheels in terms of offset etc? Can i literally get some alloys and stivk them straight on? Is this for the 1.6 and 1.9 alloys? Sorry its a bit of a newbie question! Cheers
dan_cole69 0 Posted January 28, 2009 hi there and welcome to the site. to answer your question yes you can put 1.9 gti or 1.6 gti alloy wheels straight on your cj. cheers dan ps i think this question maybe in the wrong place
jonnygoodhand 0 Posted January 28, 2009 Some people have reported that 1.9 wheels can rub the rear arches on a base model. This was certainly the case on my 5dr DTurbo, but it maybe issolated to the 5 door versions.
dan_cole69 0 Posted January 28, 2009 they wont on CJs because i have got one and its got 1.9s on it and they dont rub even with 2 in the back (and it is lowered about 50mm) cheers dan
DaveW 6 Posted January 28, 2009 They can rub if they have a 55 or 50 profile this mainly due to soft suspension on the base models.
Dayve 0 Posted January 28, 2009 Wicked! cheers guys! I looked for a place for a question on wheels and couldn't see one. Am i being stupid? I'll try and source a nice set from someone! I'll get some pictures up afterwards. Cheers
mr_exe 1 Posted February 1, 2009 Our CJ had 1.6 alloys on it with no problems at all. Don't forget to get a set of alloy wheel bolts as well if you are changing from steelies. If you keep the steel spare make sure you have the shorter steel wheel bolts with you in case you have a puncture (guess how I know this!)
jimistdt 1 Posted February 1, 2009 I've got a set of White 1.6 X5 Powder coated. Will be in For Sale as soon as its been approved by the Mods.
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted February 2, 2009 1.6 wheels and 306 DTurbo 14" wheels will be fine with 185/60/14 tyres on. 1.9 wheels with 185/55/15 or 195/50/15 will catch on the back from my experience and that is even unlowered. 1.9 wheels will catch on the front arches as well if they are lowered as the GTI has a wider arch with less lip under. I would go for the Harrier 14" wheels as they look great on base models and you can deck them if you want. Catching wheels is such a pain as you cringe every time you fancy a good drive.
