205 1.9 Gti Gearbox Failure

Hello everyone, had to swap boxes this weekend due to an oil leak from the box/block interface and a slippy clutch. To my surprise I found a hole had been smashed in the casing of the final drive. The box had 30k + an unknown number of miles on it so I'm not too concerned but was wondering if anyone else had ever done something similar and whether this is a common problem with the BE3 box?

The very same happened to mine when the diff pin came loose and smashed its way into the bellhousing through the diff casing.

I heard that this is a fairly common problem.
