Help Needed With Originality Questions

I have a 1.9 GTi which was registered in may '89.I'd like to start ordering up some bits of trim to replace worn and broken items,but before i do i need to know what i've got???

From my best guess,judging only by parts listed on e-bay,i think i have what is known as a phase 1.5 model,would this be correct?Should i have clear indicators at the front,and smoked at the rear?And should my interior trim be grey,not black?I'm also guessing that the red reflective type of rear panel which lives between the rear lights and says '205 gti',isnt standard?

Is there a good reference source for this kind of thing?Lastly,who do the majority use to buy this type of parts from,can the main dealer still supply,or is a specialist a better bet?Any advice and recomendations welcome.Cheers,Mike

In a nutshell

 

Phase 1 cars up to about 1987-8, the main difference is the dash, in particular the heater controls, which are a slider type, steering wheel is only 2 spoke.

 

Phase 1.5 cars from 1988 to 1990, the dash now has rotary heater controls, trim and bumpers are grey, seats are grey, indicators orange, rear lights are red/orange/white, 3 spoke steering wheel.

 

Phase 2 cars from 1990-1, have the rotary heater controls, trim and bumpers are black, seats are black with red check, front indicators are now clear, rear lights are the later type red/smoked, reversing light moves to the rear valance.

To add...

 

The red reflector strip between the lights was a Peugeot official part available as an option from dealers for any 205. So you can have one (they are not after-market cheap add-ons) but as standard the 205 GTI had the black badged panel.

 

To get hold of stuff keep an eye on eBay for everything really, ask on here as many people have enough parts laying around to build a whole car!, you may find parts in scrap yards from GTIs and lower models and failing that try Service Box and your Peugeot dealer.

90 models, and I believe also late 89 models can be a bit of a mish-mash of Ph1.5 and Ph2 parts.

 

For example, mine is late 89 and has grey interior and exterior trim, but clear front indicators and Ph2 rear lights. My first GTi was also an 89 but was 100% Ph1.5.

Thanks gents.Unfortunately the reflective rear panel i mention has a crack in it,so i'd like to replace it anyway.Is the original item always black for this part,or did they also do grey ones like the rest of my trim?I notice Mat only mentions a black one.

My bad I did not mean to call them all black just came out that way! Tbh I don't know 100% but I would think that it's colour was changed from grey to black with the phase update. That would make sense. So you would be best to source the correct one, and as it happens I have a phase 1.5 rear panel, I will dig it out and check for you. If it's in good nick which it should be it will be available to buy if you want.

Phase 1 was Grey, yes there was a difference in exterior trim colour between phases.

It should go pretty much as above but to confirm

 

Phase 1, 1984> 1987/ Early 88 (Grey trim & 1.6 Black seats, 1.9 had grey leather)

Phase 1.5 1988 > 1989/Early 90 (Grey Trim and Seats)

Phase 1.75, 1990 (Grey Trim Black Seats)

Phase 2, 1990 > 1993 (Black seats and trim)

Phase 2.5 1993>

 

I have added the odd 1.75 and 2.5 as the trim type changed in these years.

 

But late 1989 car's had the black seats but grey trim and earlier lights

1993 on just had a trim revision to the door card's

Mine is a late 89 1.6 and has grey cloth seats and Ph2 rear lights. I'll admit that the lights may be a coversion, but I really don't think they are. The seats I'm sure are also original. It has a very well documented history and was almost concourse a few years back prior to the engine conversion.

 

89/90 seems to be one of the years where Peugeot just used what ever was to hand in the parts bin without sticking too much to a particular set standard.

I thought of something that indicates(excuse the pun)that mine originally had orange indicators,and that is that my side repeaters are orange.

I'm also looking for an original airbox set up to replace my k&n system,so if anyone has this and would like to part with it for some beer tokens,i'm all ears(cant post on the for sale/wanted section until i've posted 20 times)

Sorry to make it harder but all 205's had orange side repeaters, clear/white ones were never used even on phase 2 models with clear front indicators.

I have an original airbox and all piping also, will be able to dig it all out next weeked and if you still want/need anything let me know.
