I've made a silly error during the end of season engine bottom-end rebuild. Before removing them, I checked that all of the mains and big end caps were clearly numbered. The orientation of the mains caps is easy due to the flywheel-facing 'darts' that are cast into the caps. However, I failed to note the orientation of the big end caps. Should the shell 'tangs' be on opposite sides of the journal, or both on the same side? I have a view, but I don't want to 'lead the witness' so to speak.

1.6 XU5J crank float query
Grenouille posted a topic in XU 8v Engine Maintenance and Performance Upgrades
I posed the same question on my overhaul thread but thought I’d have better luck asking directly on here. During my engine rebuild I’ve disconnected the big end bearings, torqued the main bearing caps to 46 Nm and found a reliable means of measuring the float (dial gauge directly onto the con rod end). This gives me a float of 0.06 mm when levered with a large crow bar. As I lever it I get a higher reading of 0.1 mm approximately, however the needle settles back to 0.06 mm or so on release. The specification that I’ve read quotes 0.07 to 0.27 mm tolerance. Is this an acceptable end float? -
No Engine Oil Pressure - S16 Crankshaft Spacer
vader posted a topic in XU 16v Engine Maintenance and Performance Upgrades
hello i've bought a car last year with multiple problems like overheating, water inside the engine oil and no engine oil pressure... somehow i manage to solved the 1st 2 problems...but the last problem puzzled me...no engine oil pressure...(only 2 Bar on the gauge). for the last problem, i've changed an oil pump, eng. oil water cooler & a pressure switch...but to no avail.. i figured out maybe the engine has gone an overhaul before..that the crankshaft spacer might have been wrongly placed which make the oil pump gear to slip hence giving so little pressure. i would be appreciate if someone out the can point out to me the correct position of the spacer on the crankshaft...outside the oil seal plate or inside?? please advise.... thanks- 16 replies

Hello folks, I've done a likely silly thing, putting in the flywheel side crankshaft oil seal, I've drifted the thing as far back as it will go. I was following the advice in the peugeot workshop manual for the mi16, which advocates tapping it fully home. But since then I realise that is using a special peugeot tool (drift) with the oil seal, and this might locate against the outside of the block to stop the seal going all the way back. Looking at another engine, it looks to me like it may still seal with the seal all the way back, but I'm not sure. Has anyone done this before and had the thing still seal?- 9 replies
