Close Ratio Gearboxes

Recommended Posts

Kartman205

I see a lot of topics regarding the use of different gear boxes and final drives eg 1.9 with a 1.6 diff etc.

I came across a link to a guy with an enormous amount of valuable info regarding various cars/projects he had built , bugger if I can remember where tho, but he listed all the ratios for all the boxes and the close ratio box for the 1.6 is the 1.8 diesel with the 1.6 diff. Should work with the 1.9 as well.

The diesel has a narrower power band and needs closer ratios to keep it in there but has a taller final drive to give it a reasonable top speed.

Sorry if I`m telling everyones Granny how to suck eggs but I`ve not seen anyone pick up on it, it seems all mi16 or nothing. But then again I am a newcomer.

so which would be the best gearbox to use with a 1.6 GTi then or would it be better to do as said above and use a diesel box with a 1.6 diff?

What do you want to use it for? That would be the obvious question. generally, the 1.6 box as it is is pretty well recieved.

If using a 4.8 diff, I would use the high 1.9 1st gear to prevent over revving on take off. The car would accelerate faster as you will be able to hang on to the gear longer.

I once experimented with a 6:1 ( yes a six) diff in a 2.0 ltr mk2 Escort rally car, it was so low geared the car moved about a car length before 2nd gear was needed!!! Didn`t go much further till 3rd.

Needless to say the 5:1 went back in.

Quaiffe offered 2 options on 1st gear ratios (Clubman and Pro) just for the above reasons.

If the regs would let me I would go the close ratio option.
