Axle/beam Questions For A Change.

Recommended Posts

Firstly, am I right in thinking a base model 309 has:

Drums

Different trailing arms (especially when compared to a gti arount the ARB area)

Different stub axles

Thinner or no ARB

Thinner TB's.

The reason I ask is I have a 309 gti axle with one seized arm and a good base model 309 beam.

Best case (but I doubt) the beams are identical other the TB's, brakes and ARB and just swap that lot over.

Worst case the arms are different, and my GTI shafts are 'shafted'!

If so can I put base model shafts onto gti arms then put that lot into a base model tube?

Is it easy swapping shafts?

Cheers in advance.

yep, pretty much correct on all counts, I think the arms in general are the same, bar possible differences in the geometry.

Yes, if you have access to a press

Other than the silly drums the main difference I noticed was on a gti theres a small dust cap (size of a penny) which when removed gives access to the ARB, the base model unit has in its place something resembling a hub nut dust cap (big) which looks like it possibly isnt removable. So will it have an ARB?

Think he means the cap in the arm where an ARB plate usually goes on the 205s. about the size of a hub bearing cap!?

Hi Dino u got it back OK then?

If the base model beam has no ARB, then it will have a plastic cover in its place - this is removeable and simply taps out.

If you've got a "good" (read - serviceable tube and two good shafts) then you have the main bits you need to repair your 309 GTi beam. Obviously you'll need bearings and seals from Peugeot if you're going to replace them at the same time - and frankly it would be extremely foolish not to.

So basically, a 1.1 beam is the same other than the brakes, stub axle, tb's and arb. All I need to do is swap the above and i'll have a gti beam?

I was on the internet on my phone, hence the repetition!!

Nice one, i'll get some pictures up at the weekend so people can see what I mean by the differences in the ARB access area.
