Guest 205dangti Posted January 4, 2009 ive had my 1.9 gti for about 7 months and it has always had a 1.6 gearbox. other than the crunching there isnt much of a problem other than top end, i have a 1.9 box to replace it with but im worried it will be s*it slow afterwards? does anyone have any advice. obviously a mi16 box would be better but i havent got one. jplautomotive 0 Posted January 4, 2009 hi i ran my mi16 on 1.6 box when i first fitted it was ok but topped out at about 104 mph fitted mi box to it and now goes to 130 with more left , didnt make any difference that i could notice to being slower , if any thing if feels right . though the gears feels better jonny
bill 0 Posted January 4, 2009 my mi16 is on a 1.6 box and it does well over 104mph
projectpug 0 Posted January 4, 2009 104 to 130 with just changing the box , that doesn't sound right you can hit that in 4th with a mi set to rev to 7800
GLPoomobile 958 Posted January 4, 2009 My Mi on 1.6 box will see 130 easily (GPS indicated), and previous 1.6 8vs both saw about 120, and they have a lower rev limit than an Mi! Sorry, not really relevant to the OP though! I've not driven a 1.9 8v on a 1.6 box so couldn't say how different they would feel. It'll certainly feel less sprightly on a 1.9 box, but I shouldn't think it will be too much slower as it was designed for that engine after all. My old 1.9 felt pretty quick anyway. An Mi 16 box would not necessarilly be "better". By top end problem do you mean hitting rev limit at about 120 mph in top? (1.9 should allow 130) or do you mean it just revs too high at cruising speeds? You see a 1.6 box will get you to 120 MPH quicker than a 1.9 or an Mi16 box. But if you like to have a bit of civility in a 205 then a 1.9 box is the best way to calm the noise down when cruising. But it's probab;y not worth it as it will still be noisy compared to more modern cars so stick with performance! Edited January 5, 2009 by jengis
Baz 421 Posted January 5, 2009 You get 130 on a 1.6 box with a 1.6, so why would it be any slower with a more powerful engine...
jplautomotive 0 Posted January 5, 2009 i swear 104 was all it would do , by the comments only thing i can think of is it wasnt a 1.6 box then was the box that came in the car when i got it must have been diesel one or some thing then that was not on limiter but bout 6.5 2 7k and with two drivers even flat out at bedford it got boring on the straights lol the box in it now is a mi one and is better with out a doubt jonny
Guest 205dangti Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) when i first picked up the car it did 110 flat out at the end of the revs on the limiter. it dropped over about two months to about 105 and wouldnt rev as high, i inspected the box and found out it only had half the oil it should have, so i bought the best gearbox oil i could find. cant remember what it was, it was from GSF. gave it a good drain out and got it now doing 115. i dont understand exactly how this has happened but now after the oil change in the box the car revs higher. i find i cant really go on the motorway unless i want to sit at high revs and batter my engine. i had a 300 mile round trip. and ended up chillin at 70 at 5500 revs my mates 1.9 box sits at like 4000-4500 i think the 1.9 box sounds good, im just hoping i can still beat the 106's off the mark. ORB 227 1 Cars Posted January 10, 2009 My 1984 GT Pro Performer will beat 106's off the mark! You have to work out what you want though, the 1.6 is the better box to gain speed quickly, the 1.9 will take you to a higher top end.

Yes the 1.6 will give better acceleration but a poorer top speed due to it being a 4:1 ratio. The 1.9 as a higher 1st gear than the 1.6 but the remaining ones are closer ratioed and 5th is taller than the 1.6, the diff ratio is 3.6:1 giving a higher top speed. The diesels have the highest diff ratio at around 3.4:1 but you will need decent power to pull it. As Iv`e said before on other threads it all depends on what you want to use the car for.
