Cj Issues.

Recommended Posts

Hi, posting on behalf of my little brother. He has a '91 205 CJ, which I believe is a 1.4 TU with single-point injection; and has been having some problems with it for, well, a long time.

The main issue is that it will rarely ever return to an idle, if you pull up to a junction or take your time on a downchange it will just stall.

9 times out of 10 it will start straight back up again either on the key or if you bring the clutch up while moving, but sometimes it wont start again for a few minutes or even hours. Other issues are hesitating and jerking while accelerating and these could well be part of the same problem.

He's taken it to various places to be "fixed" and none of them have managed to sort it. The last place was a supposed specialist and said that a common problem with them is the ICV, so he replaced that but it didn't help.

I haven't really got the time to sort it out for him otherwise I would have, but I don't want him to keep getting messed about by people who claim to have sorted it so looks like a bit of a session with my multimeter is in order. Before I start, does anybody have any pointers for common problems? I'm not really familiar with these engines and particularly with the management system, but I assume the same principles apply.

I was thinking about starting out with checking the ICV and the connections / live feed, and most of the engine electrics.

Air leak somewhere? Possibly under the throttle body or inlet manifold.

my brothers old roland garros cabriolet had the exact same problem as your brothers is having. i stripped and cleaned the carbs so many times before we bought a new weber carb from webcon for it. fitted it, set it up and never had another single problem with it again.

My dad had a go at sorting it yesterday as I was a little worse for wear, there were some air leaks in the inlet so sorted them out and it ran very nicely. Left it to warm up and then cam back and it had cut out, so he started it back up and it was up to its usual tricks. It was running very badly and stank of fuel. So thoughts are at the moment that it could be the Lambda sensor, as it seems to run fine when cold, but when the management switches to the Lambda it starts playing up.

Will quickly check the CTS and then try a new Lambda in it and see how it helps.

Worn throttle/SPI unit, or a faulty sensor maybe?
