On mine it is engraved / dot punched on to the flat part of the block at the bottom right hand side looking at it from the front. You might be more able to see from underneath because I think that the area in question is below the starter. I belive that there should also be a small plate riveted to the block with the engine type stamped on it. This sits on the bit that juts out above the alternator.

Regards

I think that's what he's (?) trying to find out  Going from another thread. If it's to find the whether it's a 1.6 or 1.9 8v - the number should be on a riveted tag on the engine block, facing upwards . It's a small extension of the block / head mating surface behind the alternator. Most have gone AWOL long ago, though

Thats right i was trying to find out if i had a 1.6 or 1.9. I rang a specialist and over the phone they assured me it was a 1.6.

My plate must have went walkies along time ago, no sign of it at all.

remove a spark plug and place a wooden dowel down the hole, turn the engine over by hand till the rod is at its lowest point, mark it, then repeat for the highest point.

How can you tell a engine over the phone, Allot of 1.9 engine's and even mine doesn;t have the so called Spacer fitted on it, Youcan tell by the Number's onthe ECU, AFM and Dizzy thou to a degree but again these can be changed.

They were confident that it was more than likely to be a 1.6 due to the equipment attached to it.

green injectors ,340 ecu, no oil cooler and no plate.

They work with pugs allday long so they probably know a little bit about them by now.

Anyhow if it was a 1.9 it must have ran a little crap with that attached to it.

Time to strip original engine and rebuild it from scratch..

Green injectors normally come off a GTi6, The 1.6 8v's have Blue one's fitted which can look more like a light blue after many years of heat and grime

The 2L engine is just as bad for the number as it's on the bottom front near a Oil breather, Instead of falling off they just rust over

Thought I'd bump an old topic save making a new one, but am I right to assume the 1.9 Mi16 engine serisl number ios in the same place as other XU's? I need to update the DVLA on the new engine and they want the engine serial.
