Well This Doesn't Look Good...

Having a good old poke around my recently required 1.6 and found something a little worrying. Removing the oil filer cap revealed loads of rusty filings sitting in the filler neck. They were due to the strange wire stuffy thats sitting in the top of the cap but has disintegrated. Shoving a pick-up tool down the nexk netted me a ton of filings and a worrying thought that these could find thier way down to the engine oil.

First question is; bearing in mind that the car hasn't run in the last 3 years, is the situation savable if I remove the filler assembly right back to the block and clean the assembly and the rubber pipe out? Theres a good chance that they haven't made their way right down the pipe.

Second question; if I remove the pipe to the engine block, am I going to get covered in engine oil?

Third question; If the filings are down the tube and into the block, will an oil change be enough to get them out?

Fourth question; why the hell is there steel wadding in the filler cap?!?

Cheers for any help!

It was Peugeot's bright idea to catch moisture and crap but they didnt use stainless steel so it rusted and as you've found out bits fall down the filler pipe. You can remove the filler pipe no problems, you may find its old and perished as a lot of them are these days. Just drop the oil and change your filter, could take the sump off if you want and make sure the oil pick up is clear of any crap cant do much more than that really. If its been sat for 3 years i'd check the condition of the cambelt and tensioner also before you fire it up. Giving it a good service like plugs leads etc wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks for the advice! Cheered me up a bit anyway. I had images of engine rebuilds floating round my head....

Now I've only got the hole in the inner wing to worry about!

Cheers
