Steering Rack

Recommended Posts

Guest mrtcotton

I'd like to check it all over.

Since i rebuilt LSD ive not been happy with the steering.

I've drained the PAS fliud out now, the car is up on stands with wheels removed.

If i turn the steering wheel, it feels lighter in the centre portion than near the ends, which i would expect due to its age.

However, the doesnt seem to be any play in the rack (side-to-side).

Is there anything to check for wear, or tell tale signs. I might be tempted just to re-grease it up and put fresh fluid in.

The fault : Under slow turning, it clunks badly. I know the diff wont help, but its real aggresive clunking. The PAS is VERY noisy on full lock too.

Would old fluid make a difference?

Thanks,

Justin.

most likely to be stiff joints in the steering column, usually the lower one.

Mine does the same, but also does it when turning at slow speeds.

when your on full lock does it feel like it s trying to push back the other way?

ive put mine down to old joints and stiff bushes after it not being used for 3 years so got to replace and greese them up.

might be worth changing the fluid at the same time

So by lower joint, you mean the exposed one on the engine side of the bulkhead?

What did you change it for? Which parts and from where?

Do you think my rack & pump will be ok?

Ta muchly.
