dino20vt 3 Posted October 7, 2008 Ive got a mate with a 1.9 gti, all I know is it misfires once warmed up and is undriveable, off the top of anyones head, whats likely to be causing it? More details to follow once I get hold of him. Cheers

perry318888 0 Posted October 7, 2008 poss too much fuel? would run ok when cold because it needs a rich mixture but when hot could cause problems?
dino20vt 3 Posted October 7, 2008 Too much fuel would be the ecu temp sensor?
perry318888 0 Posted October 7, 2008 quite possibly yes. its only about a tenner from partco for a new water temp sensor (i did mine last week!) and it made a difference to my fuelling problems but mine were not as extreme as a misfire when hot!
dino20vt 3 Posted October 8, 2008 My mates working away and ive not got hold him so dont have any more details, but im guessing hot overfueling or misfiring could be caused by faulty: ECU temp sensor, Unlikely but..... ECU, Ignition Amp, Fuel pump relay, AFM. Or could be as simple as: Coil, Fuel pump, Dizzy, Dizzy lead, Rotor arm, Dizzy cap, Leads, Spark plugs. Whats the chance if I turn up at his with all of the above (known workers), i'll leave an the car will run OK? Have I missed anything other than the kitchen sink and loom? perry318888 0 Posted October 8, 2008 first check how strong the spark is when cold (pull a plug out, stick it in the end of the lead and touch it to the head - i say touch, i mean rest it.. or youll get a shock!) look for how bright it is and how far it jumps ect. then put it back and get the car to missfire. when it does, get some insulating pliers (or use your fingers if you dare!) and pull out the leads one by one. if it missfires more when you pull it out you know that one is working ok. if the sound of the missfire doesnt change, you know its that cylinder with the problem. then you have to work out which part of the ignition system it is thats causing the problem.... personally i dont hink it will be an ignition problem.. but these things are simple and free to check before you have to take it to the garage for expensive labour! hope this helps! perry

Cheers for that post, GSF could not find it listed, but PartCo got one delivered in the hour.
dino20vt 3 Posted October 14, 2008 Swapped the ignition amp and ECU temp sensor, it made no difference, so changed the spark plugs and it worked a treat!
perry318888 0 Posted October 14, 2008 spot on! a nice cheap way of fixing it then! just goes to show how simple the solution can be to what seems such a major problem!
