309 Grd 1.9 - Starter, Solenoid, Alternator

As above really.

I nipped into a scrappy and a very tidy 309 GRD was waiting to be de-fluided then crushed. I think this is 1.9 and certainly didn't have a turbo.

I had half an hour to strip what I could, it looked like there had been a starting issue and a brand new Lucas alternator and genuine Pug starter/solenoid had been fitted - not a mark on them, no sign the car had even driven since they were fitted.

I managed to get them off with all the (new) wiring from alternator to +ve terminal still attached - seeing as I have got a bad case of clicky starter and battery-eating alternator I'm hoping this will all fit in nicely.

Will I need an uprated new battery if they do fit?

cheers

Ian

They'll both fit and you wont need a new battery. The alternator may have less ribs on its pulley than the Mi16 one but if so a GTI belt will fit and just not cover one of the ribs on the crank pulley.

hiya matey

That's great news - especially as I got the whole lot for £40 and I was considering replacing it all with new anyway. I guess I can swap the pulley over from the old Mi16 one if I can be bothered?

Why is it that 205 engine bays seem to be incredibly hostile environments for wiring etc whereas 309 bays seem to look so much better preserved?

If the alternators are the same manufacturer you should be able to get the pulleys off with a puller and swap them I suppose, I have run plenty with 8v belts and never had a problem though.

The new bit of wiring will probably do as much to aid reliability as the alternator and starter IMO, you're right about the 205 bay being a bad place for wiring, I'm not sure what causes it.

Thanks Kieran

I did notice there was a lot more under-engine dust/spray protection in the 309 - a panel under the rad to the sump and one in front of the wheel each side.
