205 For Hillclimbs

Recommended Posts

burr_2000

Hey all i am pretty new to this site and to Pug 205's in general, so i am needing to pick your brains for some answers. I will tell you what i have done first.

I bought a old k reg pug 205 rallye to enter hillclimbs in may, thought the name rallye (uk) ment it was something special but found out it was just basically stickers on a basic 3dr pug. The engine was a iron 75 hp lump and the gearbox was a long ratio, Switched engine and gearbox for a low mileage Written off XS.

While engine was out all mounts were uprated so engine is pretty firm. I used a ss exhaust 4-2-1 manifold made for a 106 which fits fine in engine bay but when it comes under engine it hits subframe so a bit of cutting is involved. Ti motorsport do a twin webber manifold so i purchased it and some webber 40 DCOE's to fit ( The top mount needs to be cut and slim line filters or short trumpets to be used because space is minimal). Bought a 285 newman cam from Hiflowheads which can run on the original valve springs. A short shift gear linkage is a must and i purchase mines from griffiths Engineering.

I spoke to two specialists companys and cant remember names now, but one said the lighter the better of a flywheel on xs but the other said you loose torque and he would not touch it. i fitted standard flywheel.

Anyway to top it off i fitted iridium plugs and sent the car round to local garage (www.rickygauld.co.uk) be set up, i dont have a clue about set up of webbers.

The car pulls like a train now but still need more power because i am in the 1400 cc class and still off the pace. This is where i need help. I need a diff, prob Quaife, majority off cars in my class had and this is a must, Not throttle control like some people try say (guys with the diff :) ). My suspension is good koni.

Is there anything else i could do to engine, remember i would like to stay down the carb route and stay in 1400cc class. Any ideas at all (start cheap ideas then you can suggest more expensive lol) including mix and match pug parts. i have been offered a 1.6 106 rallye head (ported polished) but not sure if my manifolds would bolt on or if compatible at all. Hope you can help dudes. would send images of car but dont know how.

maybe fit a GTi front subframe and use the better wishbone set up with the independant front ARB. doesnt require much, bar lopping off the gear pivot mount and rewelding elsewhere.

id agree with having no diff. your only going to have what 100-110 hp? stay with the XS box and when it goes kaput look into an BE conversion.

once youve got a BE conversion you can run 1600 gti hubs and shafts for the extra wide track...

if your staying with the carbs route. look into a megajolt mappable ignition. depends how good you are with wiring but ive now wired mine up and its very very simple to do..

if your using an XS motor look at maybe using the domed pistons from a citroen AX gti or 106 1.4 XSi, as a cheap way of raising the compression.

the exhaust manfold will be compatible for the 106 1.6 rallye head your talking about but the inlet ports / stud pattern will be different. rendering your inlet manifold you currently have obsolete.

P.S forgot to say if you choose to go down the route of the 106 cylinder heads there are compression issues that have to be solved. its not a fit and forget job. the 106 heads apparantly flow better than the 205 rallye/xs heads so it is worth doing. there is sufficient info on the forum to tell you what the problems are with such a conversion.

Hi bren cheers for the reply, i did look into that and was very tempted but the weight is something i did not want especially with only the 1.4.

So the lower block i have is ok and could use ax gti pistons (which is cheap option so far) and then use a rallye head but find a new inlet manifold that takes webbers and also i would prob have to do a bit of milling on this new head?

I contacted Hiflowheads and they said its a good idea to put the 1.6 rallye head on (flows better) and they could do the milling to get the compresion ratio right to suit the standard xs bottom. I thought they were pretty reasonable to, estimated about £80 to mill and block off injector ports. They have a inlet manifold to suit my webbers also which costs £200.

How much work is it to get the domed 106 xsi or ax gti pistons to fit, is it straight swap if not i might not bother?

Sounds like you need to think what you want to acchive really, Not wanting to sound negitive but a budget is a must.

Then I would build a complete new engine to a given spec

Build the box again to a Spec with a LSD fitted

Sort the suspension with GTi front end with Neg camber and the rear
