How Do You Seperate Pistons From There Rods?

Recommended Posts

Goliath

I have some low comp pistons to go in a 1.9 engine I am rebuilding but i need to put the pistons onto my 1.9 rods, how do I get the standard pistons off and the new ones on? It looks like the shaft that the rod rotates round should just push out but I dont want to damage anything by doing it wrong!

cheers!

Aren't the 1.9 8v gudgeon pins pressed in, rather than held in by circlips?

You'll need a press then.....

For 8v rods you need use of a press or a decent vice (depends how concerned you are about the pistons) but the Mi ones with a circlip I just pushed the gudgeon pin out by hand once the circlip was out.

They might need quite a bit of force to shift them - almost certainly need a press.

If you do remove them ok, probably best to get a local engine rebuilders/machineists to fit the rods to the new pistons. I think they usually heat the pistons so they expand and make fitting easier and less likely to cause cracks. My set were def. heated.

Theres one special tool for this job , however not so many garages have one except the Peugeot/Citroen service ..

Anyway it can be done with a vice , but i found it a bit dodgy  it's one of those "odd jobs" ..

Pistons/conrods assembly procedure and tool description :

I only used a vice to get the gudgeon pin moving on one set & the pistons weren't being reused anyway.

If I was wanting to reuse the pistons I'd pay for it doing proper if I couldn't find somewhere to do it myself.

I don't Know if it will work with these Pistons, but I use to change my pistons on my old ford 1650's or V6's and Mini 1340 'S' using a bucket of very hot water and dip the pistons in one by one. Leaving each one in the water for approx. 15 secs to expand them and then using a brass or ali rod and knock them out with a light mallet, not a lump hammer!!.

Then same with the new ones in reverse.

Never had any probs, doing it that way.
