Fifth Gear Cog Stripped?

The 205 I'm driving has just broken down in London, it started making bad noises not long after I got onto the M25 and initially I thought the exhaust had moved and was banging as I know there are issues with it at the moment but as the road started to go uphill I gradually lost drive and then assumed the clutch was slipping and had fallen apart based on the rattling noises. However fourth (and all other) gears work fine, I covered about 10 miles in fourth at 50mph with the rattling noises continuing.

 

I've parked it on my sisters driveway and I'm now sourcing a new gearbox obviously, but I am slightly concerned for the quaiffe diff, is this likely to be OK? It still drove fine in all other gears but has the diff been coated in bits of fifth gear?

 

Has anyone in East London, Chelmsford or Ipswich areas got a decent low(ish) ratio box for sale? (1.6, Mi16 etc)

It's worth whipping the end cover off and check the sync hub as it can fall off it's rivit's, If so you can fix it in place so any BE box would have the right spare part in it.

I;ve never seen one strip to date so your unlucky if it is

I had this happen, i hit some standing water on the motorway, after this I lost all drive in fifth but the other gears worked, I continued to commute in the car for about 2 months being a lazy sod, the thread attaching the 5th Gear sprocket had been completely stripped off the shaft, needed a replacement box.

 

As miles said just take off the end housing near the strut to inspect.

My turbo made 4th turn into neutral. Couple of miles later 5th stripped.

 

Removed the box and my diff and was fine.

I had my box apart to clean out the shot from getting it shot balsted (no matter what you try the shot still finds its way inside)

I noticed the nut on the end of the shaft was very loose. I'm assuming it was for 5th gear.

I thigtened it back up anyway.

I had the same problem on my FTO - the 5th became lose on the shaft, so just turned like in Neutral. All other gears were fine and no damage to the box or anything. Did have a rattling noise though, which was just the 5th gear cog running loose on the shaft.

 

I new mainshaft later in the gearbox and all was well. :)

If it is this, which I think is likely, is it feasible to take off the end cover, remove the hub and selector fork, put the cover back on, fill it with oil and drive it back home with four gears? I want to do this rather than repair it because the box is pretty tired so I'd like to change it entirely but preferably not on my sisters driveway.

I had a Mi16 box i bought once which 5th had stripped the splines on the input shaft. Luckily I only need the CWP (O/P shaft) so wasn't too bothered.

UI would think yes, you could probably pull the cover off and sort it quickly. But why bother. Just drive it home in 4th at 60 mph. I don't think you'll wreck the diff, all the swarf will find it way to the bottom of the box. If you're scraping the box anyway that's what I'd do

When I stripped my MI box had the same issue with the input shaft, luckily had a spare 1.6 box with a servicable input shaft.

It was making some pretty nasty banging/clanking noises :unsure: It was quieter under power but coasting in or out of gear sounds awful.

 

Also I have remembered it started to sound like a straight cut box just before I parked it up, I'd forgotten about that and surely thats a bit worrying? I took the fifth gear cover off an old box to familiarise myself with it and as its all pretty self contained I would hope the damage is localised but is a classic mini like noise under power in all gears a bad sign? This car doesn't have breakdown cover at the moment so I only want to drive it back if I am confident in it, otherwise I'll bite the bullet and take a new gearbox to London and change it there.

I just spoke to my mate and it turns out it does have breakdown cover, I wish I'd known that when I was on the motorway...

I just got back from London, didn't need breakdown cover :D

 

The rivets holding the hub on had come off, the cogs were stripped and the nut holding the gear on was very loose. I took all the debris out, topped off the oil and then drove it.

The only ones that have stripped cogs seem to be running very high power, this one has 170bhp but used to have 130bhp of nitrous as well.
