Powerflex Rear Bump Stops

Recommended Posts

watford1gti

right the problem started last week, i decided to take the rear beam off my 1.6 gti to replace with a reconditioned item, this is when i noticed a bit of the dreaded rust around my n/s bump stop, needless to say the thing fell off in my hands and im left with these problems

1. the nearside is totally rotten where the bump stop was, its a small square piece with a captive nut on the back (i think) seems like it should be pretty cheap to fix, however the old standard bump stops looked like they screw into it but the new powerflex ones havent a thread on the back to screw into the car, how do i fit them? remembering im going to have to make a repair patch at work to get welded in.

2. how can i get the offside one off, is it a case of loads of UB40 and a big pair of grips to unscrew it?

any help will be most appreiciated the car has been off the road for over a week now and the sun is coming back.

cheers matt

My memory is really bad ! I only fitted some last year, but im pretty sure, the base bolts onto the car, then the bump stop is pushed into it. Its just a interferance fit iirc. Thats the standard peugeot ones. Ive not seen any others, but id imagine they dont come with the bit that actually bolts to the car.

The kit from Pug is goldy coloured round caps that bolt to the car, and the black bumpstop which pushes in. One of mine was missing, but i changed the pair.

Are you sure its not the cap that is still on the car ? All rusted away.

 No amount of UB40 is going to help you!

You will need 2 new cups, The bump stops just push into the cups.

It will be tricky to get the old bolts out, I used Irwin nut removersand just went very carefully not to snap the bolt.

got some on my 205 and they are crap, thery are hollow and compress way too much causing your tyres to rub!

They are hollow but this means you can do the bolt up with them already in the cup.

Never had problems with them compressing, I don't think you should be hitting them hard enough to make them compress.

thanks guys,

yeah that makes sense with a cup. the old one is still on the bump stop whereas the thread that it screws into the body has rusted causing it to snap off leaving the end in the captive nut, this side is not going to bother me because its all rusty so this is going to have a little repair welded in,

its a bit of a long shot but does anyone know what thread it is that screws into the body on the cap???i know ot is a long shot but if i now this i can start making the repair piece with the nut welded onto the back and speed things up a bit.

i havent taken the drivers side one off yet, if it just pulls off ill try that this weekend, and copy the good one (fingers cross its not rusty like the other side) and make a repair piece the same as,

so it looks like i need a set of new caps anyway.

cheers boys

M8

Drill the old bolt out if it's snapped and re-tap.
