Mi16 No Spark - Suggestions Needed Please

Recommended Posts

Mi16 Motronic 4.1 (2row) been a daily car for the past few years.

Was running fine up until a couple of weeks ago when it refused to start one morning.

Done a few checks and replaced a few parts, so far this is where I'm up to...

No spark coming out of the coil pack when a spare spark plug is earthed onto the block.

Working backwards...

12v getting to the coil with ignition on

12v getting to ignition module with ignition on

New Crank sensor which (when unplugged) shows a resistance when cranking over the engine so think it's working ok

Am I right in thinking that with the ignition on, the crank sensor should be receiving a 12v current? (3 wires into the sensor 1x12v+, earth and signal wire) If so, which wire gives the crank sensor 12v?

Swapped the ignition module but no joy.

Plugs, leads, dissy cap and rotor arm are all nearly new but the problem is somewhere before any of these components.

Good charged battery, good earths, ecu firmly plugged in, no obvious wires hanging off.

Any suggestions on where to look next?

Cheers James

Anthony

Is the fuel pump running when cranking, and is fuel being injected into the engine whilst cranking (should see/smell fuel vapour if you crank it with the plugs removed)?

Answers to those two will help pinpoint where the problem is.

Thanks Anthony, it turned out to be the relays which sit behind the off side headlight.

When I took them apart the years of exposure had completly siezed them up inside. Gave them a clean up as I didn't happen to have any spares in the garage and hey presto the spark was back. Fired up straight away.

Just need to get a couple of new ones for piece of mind and I think this time I will mount them in a box to keep the moisture away.
